Hi all, in my old truck i always plowed in low but it was a gas, today i tried to plow in low with my diesel 1 ton dually and my rpm's where very high in reverse, forward not so bad. so whats guna happen if i plow in high?? my trans. temp did'nt raise much at all in high range to day so i dont think that would be a problem.
You don't need that low range to plow. It's a diesel, it has the nutz to do it. I have not had to go to low range yet, but then again we didn't get much snow last season.

Too bad you weren't here last year. Almost record snowfall. This morning was the first push of the year, looks like it is going to be the same type of year this year.
i've had this truck 3 years now and never once had to put it in low when plowing. can't remember even thinkin bout it. "low end tourqe is why i bought this", also diesel was $2 a gallon

Yeah, pretty much everywhere but here and south Jersey had near record or record snow fall last year. I got a plow and salt spreader last season and was hoping to make my money back. THAT didn't happen. Imagine that.
with my gas trucks, i use 4 wheel drive about 50% of the time.
with my diesel trucks, i use 4 wheel drive around 10% of the time.
i have never had to use 4 low while plowing.
and i have been plowing for over 35 years.

Semi OT, but what kind of plow setup are people running? I need to get some sort of a plow rig this winter, and I'm strongly considering just putting one on my PSD rather than having a separate rig to plow. Trouble is, plows don't come cheap! Any input would be appreciated.
I never plowed with a truck, but I plow all the time with my tractor. Not snow but dirt. I don't guess plowing with a tractor would be better? I don't know crap about plowing snow.
Just want to chime in that I NEVER use 4lo. Im in 4hi all thetime just cause I like traction. I tried 4 low and if I didnt hit the brakes, id probably plow the trees down too.

I am a big fan of the Westerns. The pump and lights stay on the plow when you remove it so you aren't riding around with all that extra weight out front. Plus people have been known to steel the pumps and lights off of the truck when they are parked. I have the older unimount, which is nice and I got a good price on it. It worked great last season. The new Ultramount is really nice. The guy I sub my plowing from has one and it takes me anywhere from 5-15 inutes to hook mine up, his is literally like 2 minutes.
I run my truck in low range when plowing around the farm. There's a lot of short runs and I figured running in low range doesn't work the tranny as hard.
I'm running a 7.5' Boss poly straight blade. I bought it new last year and it's been great.
