I want to use a timer for my engine block heater so I don’t have to have the truck plugged in & drawing electricity all night long when it only needs 3-4 hours to get warmed up (it’s not that cold here… I just want the heater putting out hot air sooner rather than later on my drive to work in the morning). How many amps does the engine block heater draw when it’s plugged in?? Can I use a 10-amp-rated timer?
Depending on how cold it gets, one to two hours should be plenty of time. If it's getting into the single digits, then perhaps you may want to plug it in a little longer.
intermatic has a 20 amp heavyduty timer avail. this is what i use. more importantly is the ext. cord. i would use nothing less than a 12gauge three prong cord.
Thanks for the replies! I had bought a digital 15-amp timer over the weekend, but I found that it wasn't working right. I would set the "on" time, then set the "off" time, and when I went back to check the "on" time, it had changed to the "off" time - grrrr... frustrating! And so when I gave it a test run on the truck overnight, of course it never came on... But, when I bought it, it was the only 15-amp timer in the store. I was going to return it and get a 10-amp timer, but I wasn't sure if it would be enough. The good news is that they must have just gotten the holiday shipment in & up on the shelves, because there were several more 15-amp timers to choose from tonight. So, I bought one of those idiot-proof ones with the little dial and the on/off pegs (which is all I ever wanted to begin with!), and we'll see in the morning if it works or not...
