I'm not exactly sure what is going on, but I figured I'd better get some advice ASAP.
My wife just called me from her errands and says that her '00 Expy is "acting VERY weird."
When she turns the ignition off (and removes the key), she hears a loud blowing noise like the A/C is set on high (but the heat and A/C are OFF) and all the electrical things like the windows still function. She can't make it stop.
She can start the vehicle and drive just fine, but can't really seem to shut the electrical system down, even with the ignition off and key removed.
Does this sound at all familiar to anyone? Where do I start looking (assuming she makes it home...)?
The drivers door ajar switch is probably stuck. Those systems (radio too) will stay on until the drivers door is opened. If the switch is stuck and doesn't make contact, the vehicle thinks the door hasn't been opened yet. Usually spraying a good amount of WD-40 into the latch and shutting the door 10-20 times will clear the problem up.

Well that is very good news! She did tell me that it seems to quit usually when she rocked the door all the way open and/or then shut it again, so that sounds like you're on the right track.
I still can't figure out the deal with the blower, though. She says if she's driving around with the blower OFF, and shuts the ignition off to get out, this "loud fan noise" starts up and doesn't quit until she plays with the door as I've described. She can't feel any air coming out of the vents and isn't sure that it is the A/C and heat blower motor -- but she says that is exactly what it sounds like. (If the duct valves are set to the floor vents, I doubt she'd have felt the air anyway, so it could definitely be that.)
Actually, I'm home now and she's right on. The vehicle has been off for a couple of hours now and the blower fan is still running. The air is coming out of the heater vents.
When I play with the doors and/or keyless entry pad it stops for a second, but then comes right back on.
At this rate the battery will be dead within a few hours.
I'm stumped, but I guess I'll just have to let it die. We were supposed to leave tomorrow for a trip in that vehicle (now I guess it will be three kids, luggage for four days, and food in the Focus!) so I don't even have time to take it to the local mechanic.
Any time I switch the key to the accessory or run position, everything seems normal. As soon as I switch it to "off" the fan comes to life. I'm really not sure what other systems (if any) are also energized, as the fan has drawn down the battery far enough to kill off most other systems.
I've got a battery charger on it, but with the fan running constantly, it's having a hard time catching up. In another few minutes I should be able to start it again, and then will try to see what other stuff I can figure out.
(Guess I can pull a battery lead, charge the battery by itself, and then hook it back up. That would get me started, I suppose.)
I was able to get the A/C display to come up and changed the vent setting so now when it is "undead" it blows out of the normal vent ducts. Not that that means anything.
pull the fuse to the blower motor , look in your manual for which one runs it. if you have to and its the only thing that is running when the truck is off pull the fuse to it when the truck is sitting overnite or whenever and just pop it back in when driving until you can get it figured out

Well, I though of that, so it must be a good idea!
Unfortunately, the battery is now very dead and when I hook my charger to it, the needle on the meter pegs all the way over (overload) and then back to zero and then overload and zero and back and forth (about twice a second) until it shuts down. So I can't even charge the battery (fuse pulled or not).
even if it were fully dead you should still be able to charge it?? can you jump the truck to start it? while its running your alt will re charge it, unless the battery is bad which im not sure maybe someone else can chime in but possibly the battery dying was causing your crazy electrical issues??

What if you pull off the battery cable and then connect the charger? This way you've eliminated the entire vehicle as a cause for not being able to charge the battery.
My 00 Expy did the exact same thing. You probably have a broken front windshield causing the seal to leak water on to the GEM module. Dry the gem module out and get the window fixed. After you get the battery charged just pull the fuse for the heater/blower to keep it from running. If the window has been leaking a long time, the module could be toast. I would get the window fixed first before spending the big bucks on a new module. My new window fixed the problems. Same gem module and working fine. Common problem with these rigs.

I appreciate the further advice!
My windshield has no visible damage, but I suppose that doesn't mean it isn't leaking. Hate to spend nearly $200 for a new GEM if that's not really the problem, but I also hate taking it to someone who will charge me another $100 just to tell me that it is.
My '98 is doing kind of the same thing. Key chimes when it is not in the ignition and the radio comes on by its self. It has been sitting for a couple of months and after a lot of rain the last couple of days the floor mat had water in it. I guess I need the windshield replaced and then a gem module.
