Hey all. I have a stock 01 7.3L PSD that sits for weeks on end. I took it up north and put about 900 miles total on it over the last week and a half. I pulled a 5500 lb car trailer for the first 400 miles and ran solo for the rest. I seem to remember this truck having considerably more power than what it seemed to have these last couple of trips. I tried running lucas fuel system cleaner in it and it helped, but I still believe there is a problem. I believe fuel delivery related. I hear the turbo singing away, and hear no boost leaks. I changed the fuel filter about 5000 miles ago, and drain it often. When I get on the throttle, but not allow it to shift, it just makes noise, not really pulling or accelerating. It sounds like the "diesel rattle" is getting louder, but not going anywhere. I actually LOOSE speed on hills-SMALL hills-trailer or no trailer!!! I try not to let it downshift because diesels work better and more efficent when loaded. Im wondering if the IPR or high pressure oil pressure sensor isnt giving me a problem-reading less (or more) than what is really there. Maybe even a fuel pump not supplying enough fuel? Any thoughts???
One more thing. I took a trip a few months ago-no trailer- and got around 16.5 mph hand calculated. This trip, with the trailer I was getting about 8.9 hand calculated (I used to get 12.8 religiously pulling this trailer) and I got 13.5 mpg hand calculated without the trailer. I have not run biodiesel for over a year. I know its getting colder, warm up time, colder inlet air temp, blah blah blah, but this power thing doesnt seem normal.
Sorry for the long post. Im trying to hit all the bases and points. I am looking forward to your replys. Thank you. Aaron
Boost leaks?? My boots that went from the motor to the y-pipe were leaking and caused a loss of power. The Exhaust back pressure tube can get clogged and cause loss of power and lower MPG as well.
Loosing speed on small hills? I'm thinking boost leak or worse, could be the tc slipping. I would start by checking the pipes for leaks though, since thats basically free and easy to do.
Thanks for the fast replys. I know the TC isnt slipping because the motor isnt flaring up, or even changing RPM's at all-unless it downshifts. I would not think I have any boost leak because I dont hear any air hissing noises at all. And I would THINK any leaks substancial enough for the truck to lack power I would be able to hear it, right? thanks again for the fast responses. Keep 'em coming!!!

You might be surprised at how a small boost leak is hard to notice. Maybe make up a boost leak detector and check? It's the only real way to know for sure.
I did the foil delete on my truck a couple weeks ago and everything was all good then the other day I was coming home and the truck had no power would not get up and go when getting on the throttle well I did not hear any hiss and seeing as how everything was fine after putting the pipe back on the truck for a week or better I thought wow a boost leak how but sure enough I checked the boots and the clamps had worked loose. I say check the boots for leaks.
on another note, my egt prob was leaking and eventually blew out, once i got it re-drilled and tapped the power was alot better than before and it was a small leak and i never heard it leaking either.
I also am leaning towards the boost leak scenario, but I am thinking more on the Up-pipe side, causing less turbo drive pressure.
Check up-pipe collector on rear of turbo for tell tale soot streaks, and all the way back down to the manifolds.
For grins and giggles tighten all boot clamps (2 boots on IC, 2 boots from IC pipes to turbo manifold, and 2 boots from turbo manifolds to intake plenums in the valley)

I'll second that, I drove to Dallas wondering why my mpgs weren't what they normally are. The day after, I checked my pipes and sure enough they were loose. As soon as I got them tightened up, my truck took off without a problem and mpgs went back up.
Well, I guess if I have this many votes for boost leak, I better check out some boots then! Thanks for all the replys. I will let you guys know what I find. Thanks again for all the input! Aaron
