I would keep your 302 in good running condition, but don't throw a lot of money into it. Just wait a few years and save your money, then decide if you want to build your 302 or put a 360 in it's place. A 360 will bolt up to a C6 right?
A 360 will bolt up to a C6, but not a C6 from behind a 302. FE motors have their own pattern, the 240/300, 221-302, and 351w share a pattern.

Ditto the thoughts on the 302. It sounds like it's solid, and without $ub$tantial money, it's not going to be some firebreather....

But I'm repeating myself...

Good luck to all.

small tube, full length headers will bolster the low speed torque SIGNIFICANTLY and will help it all the way through the RPM range. Shorties aren't worth the bother, but small tube full length headers are worth the trouble.

BTW, I doubt that this truck has a C6 behind a 302. I expect that it's a C4.

I guess I missed any other discussion about your background that led to comments about your education. It sounds like you've got a plan and have your act together.

My daughter is a senior in college and after a few changes in her major has finally set the course to finish with a degree in criminology. We are very fortunate when we find good young people that are willing to put their lives into law enforcement.

When I was young I spent three years in the Army and it changed my life very much for the better. Today, very few young people are interested in serving in the military or law enforcement.

Best of luck to you.

Very good! I'm glad to hear another man near my age interested in law enforcement. I started out wanting to join the military but lost the nerve when I turned 18. I then turned my sights onto being a Police Officer. After being in close with the Police I've decided to remian as a Security Officer. I simply do not have the patience needed to be a good Officer.

I have very much respect for our Military and Police. They are the most honorable, patient warriors and protectors that have ever existed.

Good luck to you my friend!

very much a huge thank you for serving our country. I also was thinking bout going into the Military. But i decided not to since i didnt want to get away from my girlfriend. It would be hard to be away from her. But otherwise 6cylbill. thank you for your comment on me havin my stuff together. It is very important to me to serve my community and help stop violence that is so bad in this world. Mainly i want to be in a gang task force. Reason for this is that in my little city where i live over the past few years its started to get huge and the infestation of gangs have started. In school in the past 3 weeks there have been several arrests and gang fights involving bout 20 kids. It sucks.

listen to us geezers!

yeah I used to do the same thing..loud and obnoxious, puttin money into stuff i shouldnt. My dad used to say dont change what the car companies has spent lots of dollars perfecting or youre looking for needless expense and constant maintenance, unreliability and wasted money. Well I had to,cause I wanted it fast( in my mind) and really good llooking to my peers (chicks hated that crap generally), reliability and safety was way off the radar. Loud cars are made fun of no matter what you think. Same back in my day. Its the mellow rumble during idle that gets em. stockers dont have it. I now have a 351w with a 560 lift and 325 duration and good quiet mufflers. The sound out the back is like a bigblock moterboat in water at idle. The cam makes it at idle, just lope with the whole body rocking ,menacingly. If I can post a pic of the car,I will. Oh,after looking around I see there is no way to upload a pic. If Im missing it someone tell me how to.
Really, when you get a little older you'll wish you followed our advice.

It's an old thread, but the info is right.

Your engine has low compression and a timid cam. Nothing you do will bring it close to the 225 net HP that the best 302s hit, unless you do a tear down rebuild with new pistons, cam, intake, etc.

What does your engine rev to easily? 4000? Does it strain to make 4500?

Headers aren't going to add much to a low rev motor.

Read this post:

Check out your carb. Depending on what you have, you may be able to get a bigger 2bbl. This, along with the duals, will give you the easiest, cheapest 10 or so HP you'll ever get.

As for a '95, the link I posted says 195 hp, with 270 tq, using sequential EFI, and 205 hp 275 tq using multi-port EFI for manual trans. All kinds of stuff is different in these engines, not the least of which is electronic fuel injection which would be a costly conversion in your case.

And now for the lecture: Your loud truck merely serves to alert law enforcement and draw them to you. Everyone else will hate it and will tell you so over beers at your 10 or 20 year reunion. (including those with their own loud vehicles) Concentrate on school, don't throw money away on a truck. Focus your efforts on making it safe--things like tires, brakes, wipers, defroster function--you know, boring crap that's no fun.

Prepare for college or some secondary training or education.

Once you get a job, and then get a better job, you'll be able to support hotrod hobbies. Foul up your high school, and you could face a lifetime of 26 year old trucks.....

Good luck in school and good luck with your truck.

Don't believe that headers won't add much to a low revving motor. If you are talking about shorties, that's true, but the only thing that will add bottom end, off idle torque to most any engine as much as a stroker kit is small tube, full length headers. The scavenging effect from small tube, full length headers is significant enough that you can FEEL it. There's no other single mod besides a significant stroke increase that will add enough low speed torque that you can feel it.

Looking for horsepower from such a motor is a hopeless effort unless you do major work. Adding low speed torque to such an engine with small tube, full length headers will work.
