heater core replacement

ive searched and havent found anything that says that the a/c absolutely has to be discharged and refilled. is this step necessary? i just cant see what the ac system has to do with a part that is connected to the cooling system. its just anti freeze right? thanks in advance.
almost forgot, its a 98 f-150 4x4 with 4.6 and tow package

welcome to FTE!

no you don't need to mess with the a/c system, pulling out the entire dash to get to the heater core should keep you busy enough....if you did'nt know that already.
Use the search above, there's plenty of posts, some with detailed instructions, about heater core replacement. Some have been able to replace it by loosening up the dash and working under/around it.
