Sometimes my igntion switch will loose connection to my radio, turn signal and the heater. If I wiggle it, they all come back on. Do I need to replace the whole switch or just the tumbler?
you might try spraying some pb blaster in tumblers. cleans it out and lubes it. if key is real sloppy in switch, and switch is "old", it would be best to replace unit. replacing tumbler may eliminate problem, but, if internals of switch are worn??? you get the picture here
Chances are if the switch is older, it's probably starting to go, and just changing out the lock mechanism won't help. The mounting posts on those switches, like your headlight switch, is cast in "Bakelite" which was an early plastic. When it gets hot it melts and th eposts come loose. If you are using the original 53 switch (and have the remote start button) chances are good that it's gotten hot a few times and is starting to loosn up. Also, the bakelite gets very brittle when it is old allowing the posts to loosen up as well.
But, here's the good news. If you have a starter position on your switch, it is a 56 or later type, indicating that it has probably not the original switch (so it's newer). If yourecently got a new key made, or installed a new lock, there could be some fine brass dust or filings that have gotten in there. Before you replace the whole switch, I would pull the tumblers and try to blow it out with some compressed air.
