1983 6.9

I've been looking for a 6.9 project engine for a while. I know the late 6.9's are preferred but have not found one yet. I did stumble across an '83 though. Should I avoid it or is it OK as a foundation? Just looking to build up a rock solid stock engine (no turbo) that will go a million miles.
thanks,

I would pass over any 6.9 prior to mid 85........ due to cracks in the block at the block heater hole.

According to the update I have the updated casting was implemented starting with block number 173828 (which translates to roughly halfway through the '85 model year).

6.9 blocks up to serial #u2u17900 had a thinner casting around the block heater. It is very common for these blocks to crack.

Everyone says that, but I've got two 83 trucks and an 84 and I've never had any problems, a the two 83 trucks have no telling how many miles on them, and the 84 has had the block heater plugged in almost every night since I've had it three years, never had any problems.

Why not just look for a rebuilt engine? I drive an 84 and it has a Dealer's Diesel rebuilt in it. I doubt that a remanufacturer would use the bad blocks to rebuild.

I would think anything that was still running was a good one that wasn't going to crack
