Axle tire limits

I have a 78 F-150 with the good ole 9 inch rear and Dana 44 front (NP435, NP205). I am wondering what the largest tire I can safely run on these axles is. I don't have a heavy foot in the rocks and my truck has a 351M tractor engine in it so I am good about not breaking stuff. I would love to run a set of 38" TSL radials. But if that is asking for trouble then I won't. I would use 4.56 gears. Thanks for any experiences (feel free to remenisce about fixing front axle u-joints at night in the rain during winter, I do, but that was the long since gone Jeep)

Axle tire limits

I'm not speaking from experiance here, just from gathered information but I think 38's will be alright. I've always considered 38's to be a fairly safe upper limit for tire size on Ford 1/2 ton axles. As long as you aren't hammering it in low range granny gear you shouldn't have a problem. I've seen people w/ much larger than that but I personally wouldn't go over 38".
