It all depends on the service providers interpretation of the warranty. Mine says that if I remove something and replace it with something of equal or greater ability to perform the intended job, I am fine. If I remove it and replace it with something of lesser ability to do the job or leave it out completely, then it voids the warranty. Everyone reads and interprets things in their own way, you just got one that went the wrong way.
