What I've done in the past is use a bucket with some dish detergent, and a couple of the el cheapo paint brushes in different sizes, along with a parts washing brush, to get things clean. That was on the car, in the truck you could probably use a larger brush to speed up the process. I make up a spray bottle of dish detergent/water mix to pre soak the nasty areas, then brush everything down and scrub where it needs it. Then I rinse with a garden hose without a sprayer attached so it's low pressure.
You want to be careful with your choice of cleaners, Simple Green and some other degreasers will damage aluminum surfaces, and make them spotty or dull them out. Learned that the hard way!
*edit*
Forgot to mention, after this is all done and dry, I usually spray some sort of tire protectant (good stuff, not Armor All) all over the underhood area. Let it sit for a couple days, then wipe everything down and she'll look good as new!

Here is what is under the hood of my old truck looks like right now, it will soon be a diesel though and this engine will be coming out. This engine has less than 500 miles on it, Its not really a truck type setup, it would be much better suited in a mustang. Maybe I need to find an old mustang to stick it in. I wish it wasn't so dirty, but all I have done with the truck since i set it up this way is play around on the farm with it a few times and a couple trips on the interstate tuning it, but mainly just playing around in the fields on the farm, and that makes for a really dirty truck.
By the way , the air cleaner is off because I stuck it on my pulling tractor for a bit, while I was driving it out of the garage under those Darn apple trees. The hood was off the tractor and I would have hated for the turbo to suck in an apple.

oh I thought you changed heads and "stole" some valve covers from another build. but I have to agree on the ford blue. wish they had a red . instead it's grey and two blues/ black. thats why I whent black on the car. blue would clash to much with the red
ah I know not the truck but.. it's a 5.0 . lol
