ok...gave it some taps...no-go...hooked it back up and turned the motor over a couple times...unbolt...no-go...still wiggles but hangs up...took dust cover from bottom of flywheel and looked inside..gear is stickin' out a bit...but at least 1/2 inch from flywheel....kin you say kooky?????
I've dropped many starters and never had this prob...its like the Diesel Gods have turned their collective backs on me and tossed in a gremlin to boot....dam gremlins...
3 bolts , just changed mine a week ago. i put in the high torque and love it spins over so much faster and starts so much better. will never buy stock starter for anything again, the xtra money well spent in my opinion
I had the same problem, finally found the "last" bolt hiding. Be careful where you buy your starter. I bought one from Auto-zone. I ended up changing it out 3 time before I got one that worked for more than a month. They replaced it for free, but still I had to change it.
old starter out...new starter ready for install this morning...will clean up the connections as well...thanks for the tips guys...was a top bolt I couldn't see...
Glad to hear you got it out. That top bolt is a pain. I usually keep a decent stock of tools in my truck, but I had to buy a new extension to get at the top bolt. Luckily, I was replacing it in a Oreilly's parking lot. lol.
an short update...I was installing the starter yesterday and it over balanced on my skinny wrist...dropped about 10 inches to the concrete floor...it landed on the largest power pole on the selnoid and cracked the casing...NAPA says tuff...it still spins with power applied but I think the gear is not popping out....kin I salvage this unit???
Still got your old starter, or did you turn it in for the core already? How do the solenoids compare? You could change them over, or even dismantle the new one to see if you could scavenge parts from the old one, but i don't think a solenoid is too expensive.
You could look in the yellow pages for a shop that specializes in starter/alternator service and i'd bet they'll have solenoids available. Napa should be able to get you another solenoid, depending on the experience of the counter person. He/she may not know where to look, and only knows how to find a complete starter in the computer. Just keep asking politely.
