why is "low range" light on?

Its a 95 with push-button 4x4....

I started the truck up after work tonite, and to my surprise the low range light came on half power. Just seems strange to me I've never noticed this happen before... Is it some kind of warning light? Overdrive light and engine light are still off... Don't remember reading about this anywhere in any manual...

It still engages into four wheel drive and low range just fine, I think; didn't have a field or anything to test it on, but I pressed the button and could hear the clicking noise of the hubs engaging...

Need the 4x4 working, winter is coming soon; and all my knit-witted friends are going to start calling me for help when they get stuck... :O)

I don't know...

It only did that when the temperature was real low; very odd.

Honestly I forgot about this thread, must not be a common problem.

Doesn't bother me a whole lot, it worked just fine last winter.

Just curious but has anybody ever found a good use for 4-Lo in these trucks? I've never noticed any increase in power from the low gearing, despite what the manual says....

In 4 low mode the 4x4 is ready for extreme off-road situations, like rock-crawling and heavy snow or sand. The lower differential gear ratio gives greatly increased power at the slow speed needed.

Might want to turn your 4-low button on and off a few times to see if it will clear.

Uhm...no offense, but there is a dramatic difference between the two gear ranges. If you've "never noticed" this, perhaps your truck is not actually switching into low range? It will go MUCH SLOWER in Low Range, and this is side effect, of the much greater torque multiplication (if that's the correct term?) provided by the low range.

The truck will be MUCH SLOWER for a given RPM, and gear choice, in low range.

Did you notice that, or not?

Good luck with the light issue. I don't know what that could be, but you might pull the plug off of the transfer case or linkage (can't remember just where it is--new to 4x4's myself) and see if both sides are clean, dry and uncorroded. Maybe you're getting some kind of weird back-feed thing, from some shorted connection, somehow? Sorry, but the 'lectric is not my strongest subject. Someone will probably have some better suggestions for you, soon.
