Hi - it appears that the 4x4 is engaging - but when I was stuck (GA Swamps do this to me a lot) - two wheels were working and two weren't. The front passenger side and the rear driver side were working - the other two - nothing. Also, whenever I've tried to engage the Low Range - all the light does is blink, until I repush the button. chuck
Having two wheels (one front and one rear) spin when you're stuck is pretty standard when you have open differentials. Unless you've put lockers in (limited slips don't quite overcome this either), then I'm not surprised you only had two wheels pulling.
As for the low range not engaging, that is commonly caused by a dirty shift motor. The motor can be removed and cleaned. Also, be sure you are following proper procedure. On my Explorer, you have to be stopped with foot on the brake and the transmission in N (not P for an automatic) to shift in and out of 4L.
