I just recently got my truck, and found out it wouldn't start even at 40 deg. I pulled the glow plugs and got incredibly lucky, all but 2 of the plugs were champion and none of those worked. The only plugs that worked said germany on the side. My question is are bosch glow plugs any good or should I just get the motorcraft. The reason I ask is the local dealership had a price of 20 bucks per plug.
the motorcraft/beru plugs shouldnt be that much you can get a full set for under $60 on ebay.i would stick with the tried and true motorcraft plugs you dont want to snap any gp's off that would result in alot more expense than trying to save a few bucks initially.i havent heard much about the bosch they may be good plugs but personally i would rather spend a few extra dollars just to make sure.shop around on the internet for gp's you will save doing it that way and waiting a few days.if you do end up getting the bosch let us know how they do
I tried bosch, and while they didn't distort, they did still fail after a few weeks. They did come out OK though.
The problem is ALL of the aftermarket jobber brands make glow plugs that heat up faster than the OEM and even try to sell you on it in some cases as though its a good thing. Don't be fooled, the Beru plugs heat up more slowly, but they last longer and are better designed to withstand an extended glow time should it ever happen. I have seen them withstand 30 seconds in some cases (NOT THAT I ADVISE TRYING THAT!!!) If you can afford it, I would sooner pay for the dealer plugs or try an international truck dealer as they may have it at a lower price if you can't wait for an internet order.
There is a list here for Beru glow plugs both online as well as some local parts stores that may carry them:
I can verify, I just bought some International Harvester #1819649C1 glow plugs on ebay, and they say "made in Germany" on the plug and the blister pack they come in, and say "beru" on the plug itself too.
I had one glow plug burnt out. Once I got these, I go and pull it out and guess what? It's a Autolite. I thought this engine was basically never touched, but I was wrong. I am hoping the others that haven't burnt out are the original motorcraft's.
Yep Its an 88. The block heater is another problem. The previous owner never drove it in the cold. It just sat in a shed. But the truck came with a new block heater.
