As I stated before I just bought what says it is a 77 highboy, but it has a state assigned vin and the original is gone. is there any other place where the vin could be. the reason is it has 4 wheel drum brakes lap belts only and the front marker lights are clear.
If the VIN on the door is incorrect (due to swapped door/cab/etc.), on the top of the frame on the passenger side, kinda in line with the front tire is the only other place it would be. But the 4wheel drums, clear lenses and lap belts tells me it's no later than a 75.
would it be on the top outside or in the frame hard to see if anything was stamped. but the truck has the 76-77 grill inserts. I was thinking a 76 but did they have drums in 76?
IIRC, the VIN would be stamped on the outside of the frame rail...right on top, at least that's how I've seen them. I believe 76 had power assist already. It's really easy to swap in a grille as I'm sure you know.
It's funny this thread would come up, as this past weekend 75F350 and I verified something M1llion told me a while back but I could never verify...
The VIN is stamped in the frame in 2 places on the passenger side.
It is between the firewall and shock mount on top of the frame and then also under the passenger seat on top of the frame (we now have pics to prove this).
You will have to clean the frame pretty well (wire brush helps) to see it.
I had never seen the 2nd stamping although I had looked on my 73 I had the cab off of. Therefore I kinda doubted it was there until I was helping 75F350 with a cab swap last weekend and in mid conversation I stopped talking and switched the topic to the VIN I just happened to see stamped in the frame.
Confirmed, there are two locations for the Vin numbers on the frames.

Thanks for the help on the cab swap.
so the VIN even for the 2wds are on the top of the frame rail, on the passenger side, pretty much even with the tire?
ChaseTruck754 has shown three pics.
The 1st one is a two drive truck (79) showing the rarely seen 2nd VIN location under tha cab. The main location is just foward of that on the same rail. This can be ideentified with the cab on. The special and rarely seen location requires the removal of the cab.
The other pics are of the same HB (75) frame. This is the actual location on the actual frame. The two different frames had these stamped numbers in the same locations.
