Hot while loaded? Helo

I have had a consistant problem with my truck since I started towing.
F350, crew cab, short box. 4.11 gears, 7.3

Mods Dual Edge chips, exhaust, cold air intake, bd exhaust brake, built transmission, 22.5 Alcoa's, extra tranny cooler under cab, deep pan, dual 15"electric fans

Before I had the bigger wheels, I melted 2 transmissions due to overheating while towing (around 14-19k load),

After the second transmission, I added the electric fans, the extra tranny cooler, and the deep pan

My truck still runs hot, both engine and tranny when climbing a hill towing a load. What should I do, or can I do to fix this. I really don't want to run back at stock power levels, and am getting tired of throwing money at this.

I should mention that I always set one edge chip to stock, and one on mileage or tow when towing. I have tried at stock levels, and get the same issues

How about a twin turbo cummins swap, would this solve some issues?

What do you guys think, any suggestions.

If I were you I would take off the bigger pan. Many have speculated that even though they hold more fluid and it takes longer for that fluid to heat up, it takes even longer for that extra fluid to cool back down.

I am not familiar with the stacking of the edge chips. Does the edge do anything for your transmission? Does it raise the line psi to help with shifting? And, can you set your shift points with that chip? These are things that should be done when tuning an engine with a chip. I can understand why your trans is getting hot if the chip is not controlling the trans also. Do you have pics of the trans cooler under the cab?

Lots of questions I know, but we need all the info to give you an answer.

EDIT: I pull loads as heavy and heavier, I have no overheating problems. I am not running the edge, I run the DP-TUNER. I also have a Tru-Cool cooler just behind the grill. I also have a BTS-VB, which helps also.

are you running stock fan with electric? electric fan by it's self will not move the volume of air needed.

Do you have the stock fan along with the electric fans? Electric fans by themselves don't even come close to being able to cool one of these trucks.

What size tires to you have with those big wheels? You might need to go MUCH higher than 4.11 gears to solve this problem.

I have 315/75s (35s) with 4:10s,... that is back to stock with rpms. You could run 4:35s and be about back at stock. (What ever percent you go up in tire size, go down that in gears), I think. I pull 5er with boat(8K) and dont over heat even with head wind. I havent pulled the weight you do. I dont think gears or tire size is the problem. Something else is going on. I

Are your radiator fins smashed shut? I have a screen behind grill to catch rocks and radiator is like new. ??? It sounds like you covered the basics though. Ive had a few drinks so I hope I'm not to basic with ideas.

good luck

What is the coolant level? and when was the last time it was flushed? How about coolant flow. If you have the transmission fluid cooler or OTW cooler for the transmission in the radiator, running the engine hot will definately heat up the transmission fluid as well.

Are you running 1200 for long periods of time?

Twin turbo Cummins would make your truck run like a bat out hell...You said your tired of throwing money at it, and the swap would be at least 20k...

Those Edge chips been on there when the other trans went? I think the big tires, 4.11 gears an the Edge are all working together to drive your temps up.

Thats also very true. You can also take the plastic piece between your grill and radiator to get better airflow. It the same thing you set your tools down on when your working on your truck. someone post a while back about it and said it lowered his EGT's by about 200 degrees in the summer time.

I just have 2 simple things that stuck out.

The edge. Never heard of the problems your having while using a DP tuner or a stock setup. That leaves the edge at fault in my opinion

Also get a BTS VB and tighten up those shifts, less clutch time, less heat!

Stacking chips is never good, and I promise you that those two edge tuners stacked together cannot give you anywhere near the power of a DP-Tuner.

many have speculated but never proved it because it is false. If the tc is locked it moves a lot of fluid. Sounds like the tranny is slipping way too much and is overheating. What size tires you running. might want to ditch the stacked chips and regear for the stock ratio again.

Thanks for all the feedback, really do appreciate it.

I am not convinced the chips are causing the whole problem, but yes, the bigger tires, plus the chips, plus the weight, plus the electric fans are all possible contributing factors.

I moved the electric fans to between the ac condenser, and the intercooler, and put the stock fan back on.

The overheating has only been under extreme load, and uphill, so I am going to borrow my buddies Dodge next week, throw it in the trailer, and head for the biggest damn hill around and see what happens. I should be around the 20 to 21k load, so a good test. We may throw a 3 or 4 thousand pound skid in the back of his truck before we load just for fun.

I will let you know what happens, but thanks again for all the input and suggestions. I may also get rid of the larger rubber, and swap for some 19.5 soon.
