I got an OASIS report on an 04 6.0 Ex that I am considering. It has 23 warrenty claims, most of them are 5k mile checks and some really minor issues, replace light bulbs and little things like that. But it was back in to the dealer about 10 times for a check engine light, most of the time the dealer couldn't find anything but the eventually did replace all injectors, ERG valve and a few other things. It doesn't look like it have been happening for the last 10k miles or so but it scares me a little. It has a build date of 8-03 and was sold new in CA, has 61K mile now. Should this one be avoided? Seems like the owner was really fussy and don't know if he was just overly cautious or what.
Well, you will have injectors, EGR valve and a few other parts that are 10k mile parts. It sounds like a lot was replaced and hopefully they got it and you will be getting a partially low mileage vehicle. If you get a good deal on it go for it. If it's at a dealership, you can hassle the salesman for either a bit of a warranty or a couple more grand off.
Explain to the dealer about the repairs and that your worried but still very interested in teh vehicle. See if you can arange to take a few day test drive, maybe take it home for the weekend. You can then spend a few days to look for quircks other then a few minutes/hours. If your not some young kid and look somewhat responsible and the dealer is cool this shouldnt be a problem. I have heard of more then a few dealers allowing this.
Thanks for the replies. My wife and I went to look at it this afternoon, was pretty disappointing. We drove about 2 hours one way, asked to take it for a drive, they gave us the keys but when I tried to start it the batteries were dead! Wife was not happy (that's never good!) Went in to talk to the sales guy and found out more about the truck, I was told over the phone it was a local one owner trade, it actually started out in CA and was a buy-back by Ford, electrical issues, now it's in MN. Dealer had pawned it off to an RV dealer only to get it back once they found out the history, now the dealer is stuck and trying to dump it on auto trader. Wasted 4 hours, but at least now I know. We are going to pass and keep looking.
Funny the OASIS report doesn't say anything about it being a "buy-back".
They won't, you really have to dig to find out though. However, it's something the dealer should have told you up front. It's also something they should have compensated for with the price.
That's also why I stayed away from the early 6.0s. At the time, I had X for 2 years and it was about time to trade up; Ford would send me letters, salesman would call and almost beg me to upgrade. Then I found FTE and the issues they were having and as a result, kept my 7.3.
There are good 6.0s out there, they just mostly fall into the late '04 and '05 models. The early ones were obviously the ones with issues.
