The ol' Ranger is no more. She cracked a head and I'm getting rid of her. She'll be sold tomorrow.....I'm getting a Lightning, but I'll always miss the Ranger
Gotta ask. How do you know the head is cracked? The Vulcan is one sturdy engine, not like the 2.8, 2.9 and 2.3ohv (tempo/topaz) which cracked their heads at the drop of a pin... I haven't heard of one cracking before. Are you sure it is broken? Stuff lying on the floor? Puddles of oil or coolant? Steam cleaned underhood? What symptoms?
I guess a never mind is in order, but that's a lot of bucks to spend if you don't have to. You could even use an engine out of a Taurus / Sable from a boneyard for less than a grand... You must have a job that you know is not going to get downsized or exported, eh?
If the rest of the truck is in good shape, you can get a lot more for it as buyers will discount the price by the cost AND aggravation factor, and a dealer will absolutely steal the truck from you.
Just my opining...

Following up on "tomw's" suggestions, if you are sure the problem is a cracked head, why not look for another head? Swapping heads would be simpler and less expensive that getting another engine and swapping it in. Maybe all you need is one head. That would be even less expensive.

I took it to a local trustworthy shop. I've poured more into this Ranger than its worth...sadly its time to move on.
Sucks about your Ranger, and its a 2000 too! Heck, I have a 2000 with 174,000 miles on it. Same engine as yours still going strong. I don't know how much money you have had to throw at it, it seems it still would be worth fixing though. I think thats your justification for getting the lightning! I gotta admit I'm a little jealous though, I've had a hard on for a lightning for quite sometime now!

Me too man and I've been working hard for one too! I've devoted myself to this job I'm working and its time to reap the benefits! Plus it'll be real valuable someday! I've already put 5k into the truck worth 4k. So it's time for one that will hopefully require less work.
