Has anyone put an eaton true trac in their excursion ? I have an open diff in the rear now. I tow a 8,000 lb camper and it spins a lot in the dirt/mud in the campgrounds. I have to use the 4wd way more then I think I should.
I am thinking about the true trac because it doesn't have any clutches or parts that wear out. I plan on keeping it for a long time so I didn't want to have to worry about rebuilding the clutch discs later down the road.
I use it on the street a lot too, but not daily. So I thought a detroit locker was a little over kill.
After I burned up the rear diff iin my Lightning, I replaced it with a Detroit True-Trac rear diff. I love it. No more clutches to replace, ever.
I've read a few posts in the diesel forum where guys have installed a True-Trac in the front and rear diff of their trucks. From what I've read, it's all smiles for them after the install too.
If the differentials in either my Excursion or F250 ever go out, I'll replace them with a True-Trac too, without hesitation.

Dude, you suck, you have an Excursion and a Lightning. J/K
I really want a Gen 2 Lightning more then anything. Unless Ford ever gets off their butt and makes a Gen 3 Lightning. I almost bought a Gen 2 when I bought my excursion. I went with the Ex because I tow a lot.

LOL!
Yeah, the True-Trac really performs perfectly at the 1/4 mile track, the autocross track, and in daily driving. Other than doing what it's supposed to do, I couldn't tell a difference between it and the OEM diff with clutches.
Even if they perform the same or even if the stock was better(which its not) there is little difference in price. I figure the difference in price is worth not having to rebuild the clutches later.
The guys with them front and rear should be able to go through anything.
Can the True-Trac be used to upgrade either an open axle, or a factory limited slip axle?

The True Trac is a clutchless, limited slip diff that is a direct replacement for your factory diff.
"Detroit Truetrac Limited Slip Differentials.
The Detroit Truetrac is a gear to gear limited slip unit that performs like an open differential under normal driving conditions and automatically transfers torque to the wheel with better traction when ground conditions warrant. How difficult is it to install? I do almost all of my own repairs, except for transmissions/rearends. What all is involved? Do you have to set it up with shims and a dial indicator?
Do you have to set it up with shims and a dial indicator?
Yes
remove diff cover
remove axle shafts
remove diff from housing
remove ring gear from stock diff
install ring gear on true-trac
install true-trac
set up backlash with dial indicator and shims
replace diff cover and fill with fluid
its pretty much the same thing you would do to swap out ring and pinions, if you are planning on swapping out your rear gears that would be the perfect time to add the true-trac.
If you stock diff has a lot of miles on it, it might not be working that well anymore. the stock t-lok LS diff has clutches that wear out with time and the true-trac would be a great replacement
While I really like the idea of the True-Trac, I believe that this is going to exceed the extent of my mechanical prowess. Looks like I should find a pro for this kind of mod.

Thanks for the explanation. Might be able to do it, might not. Have to think on it, and get a buddy to help me if I do it.....

Is there anywhere on the net I can get pics of how to remove the axle shafts and how to set up the backlash with a dial indicator and shims?
