My wife and I and our 3 year old going to be traveling from around the Houston area in Texas to Cleveland, Tennesee for Thanksgiving. I've been having little problems crop up here and there on my truck, such as the busted fuel line I experienced the other day. I just bought this truck about a month ago and it didn't get driven very much for a about a year and a half before I bought it. I have to wonder how many more hoses/gaskets/o-rings may be ready to give way at any time. I have an extra serpentine belt, (just put a new one on,) and an extra CPS on the way. I will be fairly well equipped toolwise, and was thinking about stocking up on extra lengths of various diameters of high-pressure fuel line. We'll be driving straight through, about fourteen each way. We'll have my wife's laptop with us, so I can get in touch with the forums if need be.
I'm not new to long trips but I'm a little concerned with the unknown as to what other little things could go wrong until all the cobwebs are blown out of this truck. Any other suggestons?
At least a spare fuel filter. I am sorta prepared for most things spare belt, filter, hell I even have a spare fuel pump and a IDM in the truck. Also I keep a quart of tranny fluid you can always use it to fill the filter bowl for priming. Plus basics electric tape, fuses zip ties and some spare electric wire.
For long trips these are some of the things I would take besides the spare CPS, spare fuel filter, at least a gallon of oil, antifreeze, a couple of quarts of trans fluid if auto trans, winter fuel treatment (Diesel Kleen white bottle & 911) tow strap or chain (just in case) several sizes of hose clamps, a good flashlight, a ground mat or tarp (it sucks working under a truck in the snow or on wet ground), jumper cables, tools, wheel chocks, paper towels, air gauge, tire plug kit. I'm sure that I have forgotten several things but others will post up with more. Have a safe trip.
Sounds like everything is covered........not sure if you did this when you bought your truck, get underneath and grease every zerk you can find....IIRC there are about 10 or so.....check your u-joints and carrier bearing too as those are not fun to change on the side of the road.

I'm ashamed to admit that I haven't done this yet.
make sure your tires are in good shape and not weather cracked at all, make sure your spare is good and holds air. check your air pressure in all tires before leaving
Like I told you, take your cell phone....... I said..."Neal is in TN, that's all you need to know." LOL He might owe DRD a favor or two. All the above are good ideas.
Tim, I've never thought of keeping those pulleys in the truck. But you are right, I had one fall off the truck the other night. Luckily I was across the street from the parts store.
Yeah, I just replaced the grooved idler pulley. I could get the pulley at NAPA for $26, but they didn't have the bolt... it's a Ford only item. My bolt was chewed up from when the pulley came off. So I went to Ford to get the bolt. You can't get just the bolt, it only comes with the pulley. And how much for the pulley WITH the bolt at Ford? $89.
I spit the alternator pulley off once and there I sat. Its hard to have one of everything. I have a little generator with me and take a battery charger, air pump, grinder, drill and extra bolts of all sizes. Have some WD40 and everything mentioned above. Also, its nice to have a camper behind you to stay warm in until help arrives!
Ahhhh, yes, yes I do. But I already replaced that pulley waaay before that. Remember I called you? "Hey Cody, how far do you think I can drive this truck with no serpentine belt?"
