winter oil / fuel additives

Looking for some suggestions for a good winter oil viscosity and additives for oil and fuel for the cold months. We have some below 0* mornings here at 6500 ft elevation, and days stay under 20* at times!

I go with 5w40 oil in the colder months instead of the 15w40 and I add Power Services Diesel Fuel Suplement to my fuel year around...

I have been doing some research on this the past few hrs since I am changing the oil tomorrow before I go on the road......I have been running FMC 15w40....I am going to switch to a FMC 5w40 synthetic for the winter.
As for fuel I always run Power Service gray bottle...but will be switching to the white bottle and keep a bottle or 2 of the 911 in the tool box
Power Service Products, diesel fuel additives, prevent gelling, clean injectors, disperse water, boost cetane, reduce emissions, improve fuel economy

Rockitdog, welcome to FTE if that hasn't been said yet. Ron and 952X4 have pretty much answered your questions. Plugging the block heater in for an hour or two before you need to leave is a good idea. I use an extension cord with a timer and set it for about 2 hours before I need to leave.

John, just curious....does your timer come on automatically at the preset time and if so what timer do you have?

Thanks for the welcome! Got the block heater and timer down, Been plugging in that old IDI for years, cold blooded son of a gun! But working 12 hour shifts and no place to plug in is a concern of mine. Here at work we see -20 on nightshift!

Not john, but I have mine on a timer two when it gets that cold here, O.K. I know thats only three times a year but.....I use one that I picked up at Walmart for outdoor lights. It automatically comes on and shuts off at the tiems you set. It has pins that you use to set the on and off times, it came with two sets of pins so you could have two different times for it to come on and go off. If you want I can look and see what the brand is.

X2 what Plowhand said. The timers can be found at any discount/hardware store in the electrical section of the store. When you pick up a timer, it'd be a good time to get a good heavy duty extension cord. I would use a 15 amp minimium rated cord. The timers are rated. I use a 15 amp timer too.

I would say close to 10 amps, maybe a little more. It will make a light duty extension cord hot, I know from experience. It's a good idea to plug it into a circuit that isn't being used for anything else. A 15 amp circuit would be a minimium, 20 amp would be better.
