I am in the process of replaceing my front axle inner seals. I found a number of great posts about ball joint replacement etc. that cover the front seal replacement, but I am to the differential removal and can't get it out. Can someone explain to me what has to be removed to get the chunck (diff) out. I thought it was just the two bearing caps. (4 bolts). This is a great site!
Thanks for confirming that it is a female dog to get out! I don't have any problems spending time, as long as I know that it will come out. What did you use to pry on/with? Did you change the inner seals. If so, what did you use?
The drivers side was the leaking side. The lube as 25% water by the time I got to it. It is my boys truck, and you know boys......
I was just in there before my knee surgery, i was changing the ring and pinion... To push them out i used a big socket that matched the diameter with a long extension, and just tapped (hardly) with a hammer from the outside of the axle tube. Might as well do both of them while you are in there. Make sure you keep the shims in order on the sides of the carrier bearings... thats important, lol
WE just finished putting the differential back together tonight. The center seals were a piece of cake. I did buy a very nice tool from QUAD 4 x4 that I used to install the seals. The carrier came out with no problems. We will install the axles tomorrow night after replacing the short outter shaft then put the rest back. Thanks for all of the help.
