hey, found a niceold truck, and i need some opinions.
1985 International 1654 2-ton Dump truck.
6.9 liter IH V8 NON TURBO
4-speed trans, 2 speed axle
GOOD SHAPE
only 75,000 original miles
good tires
nice old truck. will show pics.
$6,500 negotiable
you will need that 2 speed just to get that rig moving.... but it does look clean. if you get it i'm sure you will be in the 6.9/7.3 forums for tips and tricks...lol its a dog! but on the upside they can be made to run really good like the powerstrokes.
I think 6grand isn,t bad for that ,for what you do it will be perfect it,s not a powerhouse but that split rear end will make a huge difference as far as hauling 8tons of rock and a bob cat ? remember it is a 2ton truck.
is it truly enough motor? i wanna haul 7-8 tons of rock, and possibly a bobcat behind it.
They are nice little dump trucks, key word on "little". Most people around here use them for waste removal, (limbs, yard trash, roofing shingles, demolition debris, etc. not heavy loads)
It looks like it has a trash body on it, not a dirt/rock body, trash bodies are not built as heavy as dirt/rock bodies and can get really beat up by hauling rocks. I've seen a few of them split from being overloaded. Make sure the body can handle what your planning of hauling.
If you are used to driving big trucks when you get into one of these with a heavy load in it you will be disappointed. They are slow with low power compared to bigger trucks. They are nice trucks and do O.K. for what they were designed for, but most people tend to over load them and then complain about the lack of power. Just my .02
Test drive it well before you buy it, if possible find a place to load some dirt in it and drive it around and then bring the dirt back and dump it. A couple of places around here will do this and only charge you $25 - $35 for a loading fee. This will do two things, give you a good idea on how it pulls and handles with a load and how the dump works with a load. If it's what your looking for I hope you get it for a good price.

thanks guys. yes, plowhand, the bed is a lighter one. just has the barn-door style back on it. i wanna haul some creek rock this winter, and mulch and landscape stuff the rest of the time. all wil be local hauls. think it'll suit me? i have never had anything bigger than an f-350
The double swing doors will usually not hold alot of weight unless reinforced. The latch system is usually the week point, sometimes hinges too depending on the type installed.
As for creek rock, do you mean small stone? If so, with the doors properly reinforced, and a couple of cross bed chains to help hold the side walls, you should be able to haul around 5 up to maybe 7 tons, if loaded towards the front (to keep most of the weight off of the doors). As far as muclh and landscape stuff, that is what this type of truck was built for.
Don't get me wrong, they are good strong trucks, just not fast or with a big load capacity. But you can get them into and out of alot of places that you cannot put a bigger truck.
From the pictures I think it would be a good deal at $6K, (assuming that it runs O.K. and the dump works good under a load) and from what you say you want to do with it, it should suit you fine. You just may have to make more trips (smaller loads) when hauling heavy stuff like rock or dirt.
Just be aware of the trucks limitations. Like I said earlier, alot of people buy trucks like these thinking they have a full blown dump truck (tandem alxe, 16 yd. box) and when they don't perform like the big brothers they are unhappy. Good luck.

X2 and if you do buy it take some time to get used to the hi/lo rang drive around for a while empty till you get it right they can be finicky and it doesn,t take much to blow a dif
I don't know how the market is for these truck in KY but up in the MA area it is pretty low. My dad recently bought a 85 int. AWD truck with a 5 spd. 2 spd rear end and a 9.0L diesel for $4500. Granted its just a cab and chassis but you can pick up a good used bed and lift for less than $2000. And its got a 26,000 lb GVW. He also got 2 other trucks one with a gasser and another diesel with huge utility bodies for $2000 a piece at an auction. I would pass up on this one, and check some auctions local and other state equipment auctions. I was at a NH state auction last month and a 93 Intl. 4600 with a dump bed and a wing plow set-up went for $7900. If your interested I could get you some auction sites to keep an eye on.
I have one of those I drive at work. Its an excellent truck, think its got the same motor too. As for the hi/low, you really dont need it driving around empty. I'll just put the switch in high, and run through all five gears. When the truck is loaded, I'll do 1-4 low, than low 5, high 5. Switching 1 low high, 2 low high, ect, is unecessairy.
Actually now that i think about it, ours has a different motor in it. Ours has a straight six, not a 6.9. That truck is not gonna move out of its own way with the 6.9
