EGR-Dummy...help somehow?

Ok I searched for about 30 minutes and must have missed this but just got the truck back, second EGR in about 2k miles...you know about my troubles...anyways the tech and I were talking and I mentioned disconecting the one in the truck and hooking a "dummy" to keep the CEL from comming on (its a 2004)...anyhow he said they usuall return the removed ones to Ford, but he said "I'll make sure you get your old one back." I think he knows what I wanted to do and when I picked it up this morning the old one was under the seat, I cleaned it as per instructions and mounted it vertically in the engine bay right next to the "real" one and plugged it in.

Question: will this help?...does it even work?...am I wasting my time, trying to buy time?

P.S. I'll post pics soon of my 2K miles EGR...holey smokes it was dirty!

It will do nothing for you. Its going to detect a "low flow" situation and set a DTC.
It uses MAP, BARO and Exhaust pressure to determine the actual flow. Your "tech"
should have known this.

Here, here is a sure way to fix it and NEVER have a problem with it again. Cost me less then $70 and a few hours labor.

Well I did read in my search on here that that's for the '05 and up, the '04 doesn't detect flow did I misunderstand that post?

I'd post it but I don't know how to do a link to another post.

Here is a quote on the description of the EGR valve for an '04 F250 6.0l turbo diesel VIN P

The exhaust gas recirculation valve controls the amount of exhaust gases recirculated back to the intake. It is a proportional solenoid with a built-in position sensor. The valve position sensor is needed to give the control circuit feedback to achieve desired travel position. The exhaust gas recirculation valve position sensor is a variable resistance pintle position sensor that makes position measurements of the exhaust gas recirculation valve control actuator. Input signals from the manifold absolute pressure (MAP), exhaust pressure (EP) and barometric pressure (BARO) sensors are used by the PCM to calculate and control the EGR system flow

i got a new egr dummy valve for my early 05 non calif truck off of ebay for 35 and installed it by taking the connector that the egr is hooked to and plugged it to the fake dummy valve and tucked the dummy valve by the left of the oil filter housing, seems to work perfect for me, the egr will even open up when i have the truck running and looking at it with the hood open, turbo acts the same as having the egr plugged in, no farting and seems to run better, when i originally unplugged my egr valve the turbo vanes wint into the fixed position seemed to help off idle, but i had to have my turbo reconditioned because they stuck that way which is bad, but i prefer this setup now as the vains are fully opening and closing and boost is around 22-24 max as if i just let the egr unplugged with no dummy valve plugged in the boost would only be around 16-20 max. hope this helps.

Well I just got back from a drive 20 minutes, in the hills, no codes before, during or after, and no drivabilty issue. I also can see that the dummy is functioning; opening and closing...that all I can do today I guess I'll drive it next week and get some more miles on it and see what happens.

My god, mine didnt look that bad when I removed it for the first time at 47K miles to do my EGR delete. It had never been out before that.

I'm running a dummy plugged into the harness and a known bad one that I bought from a mechanic at Ford for five bucks that I cleaned up, mig welded shut, and installed into the intake. It will throw a code for insufficient egr flow but no check engine light so who cares. Since my truck is a 2004.25, it doesn't have the scoop in the up pipe but it did have the throttle plate below the intake elbow which I also removed.
I think it helps. It prevents a slow go and smoke situation from a dead stop because your EGR is hung open. It prevents soot and coolant(if egr cooler failure) from being sucked into the combustion chamber. And the engine oil is more brown than black on 5000 mile oil changes.
I will remove the EGR cooler the first time I have to tear into the top of the engine for any reason.

06silvercrew was right it finally threw a 0401, but who cares if it helps me rather than hurts...if it does...i cleared it then the next time it didn't one so what ever...mine doesn't have the throttle plate either.

Note that in some flash levels, the low-flow DTC will trigger a shift to a different fueling table in the ECM to try to bring NOx levels into spec w/o the EGR valve. This usually results in lower power and fuel economy. The truck will still be driveable, but it won't be performing at it's best. The different fueling strategy may only be noticeable when pushing the truck to it's limits, but it will still be non-ideal at lighter loading.

(it's late and I don't remember if this is only for the latest flash level, or if it applies to all trucks.)

What's going on???

First I drive it a while; up to operating temps; etc. no CEL.

Later that same day I drive it and boom, CEL P0401 before I go a mile.

Then today I drive it and no CEL???...why is this?

Today I drove the furthest...maybe this afternoon it'll throw the code again, I don''t know.
