The Factory supplied General LT235's on my 2002 F250 have bumps and indents on the sidewalls (ALL 4 tires!). The dealer's service tech says "normal band marks, no problem".
THE problem is they look like crap! It doesn't look "normal" to me.
I get asked about them occasionally at the station for various kinds of tires. It is normal with some makes and models, and I'm not sure if telling you to buy bigger-brand-name tires next time would even help.
If you are referring to an indentation running all the way up the sidewall from the rim to the tread, this is normal. The tire is made by wrapping the sidewall around and splicing it together, where the seam is appears as an indent. This is simply how they are made and nothing's wrong with them other than being ugly. More expensive tires like Michelin's are made differently, and do not have seams in the sidewall, this is why they are rounder and take much less weight to balance.
When I first started balancing tires I thought they were defects too. They are not, just normal for the tires for the reasons indicated earlier. Take a look at a 24.5 (rim size) tire on a tractor sometime for real ripples
I have never been able to wear out a general tire they blow out first if I had them on my truck I would watch them real close it did not help me though they looked just fine with all the flack about firestone I have wondered why no one said anything about generals in my opinion they are junk and I would not have them on anything for long

I've run Generals on the family car and had no problems with them. In fact I have a set on right now. They're good for an economy tire. I have no experience with their truck tires though.
Love my Generals, I have been running my 33x12.5R15s for two years and 28,000 miles and they still have 65 - 70% tread left on them. We have run Generals on our farm trucks for as long as I can remember and never had a problem.
