i have a 56 F600 and i dont have the key for it.well the guy i purchased it from finially found all of his fathers keys and he said there is alot of them.well i'm just guna take out the ignition switch and bring it to him to match up.but finially my question is ,is the same key go to the door also? or does that require a different key? my 56 F600 only has a lock on the pass door witch might be normall i don't ,but just wondering if i should ask for 1 key or 2. thanks ahead of time.
thank you my freinds that helps out, i'll take out the door lock as well and bring them to my freind and see if he can match them with his rat nest of keys, and if he can't well they will out allready and i'll bring them to a lock smith.
I think I remember the keys to our early 50's truck having different keyed locks for door and ignition. Squared key for ign and rounded key for door.
I had my iginition key made by a lock smith; I was lucky enough to find one that was a wizard with vintage locks. I bought aftermarket door locks, and hope to install them ( still deciding on whether to put one in driver side door) and have them keyed to match ignition.
If you find the ignition key, but not the door key, they can also re key the locks. If you do that as Dave suggested, don't forget to take the glove box lock too. It's nice whan you only have one or two keys for the whole truck.
Hey! Does anyone know where I can get a CHROME locking gas cap for my 51 that uses the SAME KEY as the door locks?
I don't believe there was such a thing as the caps were supplied by Stant.
Some of the early locking caps have a cover that pivots to access the lock.
The cover has the Ford script on it.
Yep. I had asked in another thread as well. Back in the early '80s there was a company selling repro caps that the door/clove box lock key would fit in. I had one on my '55. On that truck I had all the locks/glove box/gas cap, all rekeyed to the same key. It was nice not having to fumble through four different keys for one vehicle.
But all the ones I'm finding available today all use a double cut key (its cut on top and bottom) or if it DOES fit the Ford Keys, it is usually designed to fit on the cars instead of the trucks, and doesn't fit tight on my filler neck.
Julie--I know what you mean---on my 71-it has locking gas cap and I leave key in the ash tray--and is a pain!!
My 56f600 has dual keys--it is a custom cab--and 1 key does all.
My favorite trick is to lock doors with the vent window open and then shut vent window without locking it. When I want in---presto--push on vent glass and door opens by reaching in with my arm. Not for everyone--but my neighborhood is scared of me---haha. I should rephrase that---I am scariest thing in my neighborhood--haha
On the Five Star "Extra" Cabs there was a lock on the "dispatch compartment door." (don't wanna get in trouble with Bill or the Colonel - tee hee)
Here is a picture:
Now there wasn't usually a wind up clock from a 51 Ford car in the ash tray though...I put that in there because I wanted the clock and won't cut holes in a dash. I have another set of purely stock ash trays and "dispatch box doors" (with the lock) and no clock or logos so I can convert to pure stock if I want to.
Julie!
PS I wonder if anyone will notice the clock has been turned upside down in it's case!
Ahh...on the older models. I have not seen one on the 53-56, but then again...I never looked that close.
The starter of this thread has a 56 F-600 is why I asked.
I wasn't sure if it was an option or not on those "new" trucks.....just thought I'd throw it in as a thought since I forgot it on my first trip to the locksmith.
And to be perfectly honest, I can't remember if my 55 or 56 had one---now THAT'S senile!
