Ok--I've read through alot of threads regarding the door ajar light/dome light issue that can usually be solved with WD-40 sprayed into the door latch. However my light is still on, and no dome light when I open the drivers door--after numerous sprays and opening/closing over a period of days so I need to replace the sensor right? I called the local Ford dealer and tell the parts guy I need a new latch-no prob $37.00, he asks if I need the door ajar sensor too--wait a second its one piece right--no he says its two pieces so I order just the sensor ($30.00) and it should be here tommorrow-cool. So I take the old latch out of the door and it looks like one piece (latch and sensor) to me. Does anybody know how to seperate this unit or is the dealerships parts guy incorrect? Its kind of a PIA to get the latch out so I want to get it right the first time. Sorry for the long post and thanks in advance for any insight.
The door ajar switch comes out with a quarter turn once the connector is removed. You will see what I mean when you get the switch. You can do it while the latch is in the door but it is kind of a PITA. Removing the latch is too, so choose your poison!
It is slightly angled out of the bottom of the latch. I don't remember it being orange. Mine (1999) was purple I believe. Yours may be orange. It will have a 2 wire connector on it. From memory, I think that you can get it in and out without taking the latch out of the door. I think that I ended up removing the latch fasteners and leaving the rods connected so that I could rotate the latch slightly. It takes a reasonable amount of force to turn the sensor out of its detent, and I couldn't get a good enough grip with the latch in its installed position.
Or you could have tried the WD40 repair...most all Fords have this problem one time or another....Spray the latch ***'by with the WD40 liberally.... open close door a number of time....light goes out. If not respray and wait overnight....if THIS didn't work, THEN change the switch.
Crud gets into the switch and stops it from working correctly. A few days after it starts working correctly, give it a spritz of good silican spray to lube it.
Got the new sensor/switch from the dealer today and got it put in the latch assembly--hope to get the door back together in the morning. The old switch was froze up tight--no amount of wd-40 was fixing it. Thanks for the replies...I'll let you know if the light on the dash goes out when its back together.
