I've got a 1980 f100 w/a 300 and a 4spd ovr dr. That 2.75 gear is getting old. dont get me wrong its good on gas but truthfully i cant pull nothing. my truck is soon to have a 302 with a C4 and i'd like to have something lower. any specific year i can look for at the juckyard or any tag number i should look out for? another thing on the 9" isnt it possible to just the remove the whole carrier assembly from the front of the rear end and install it in my 9"? Any shims or problems i may run into? ANY INPUT IS ALWAYS APPRECIATED. THANK GUYS.
Yes you can just change the center section & there are no shims to worry about. I don't know for sure if the f100 would have 28 or 31 spline axles though.
Run your new motor and C4 with that gear for a while. You are going to lose OD for top speed and mpg, but the torque converter will ease your low end troubles. How much you going to tow?
Drive it in 3rd and see how it performs and revs out, because that's what you'll get, plus 100 or 200 rpm, out of the C4.
FWIW, I'd get a beefed AOD and put in 3.50s, or even keep the 4 speed OD w/3.50s. (I have that set up now with 31 inch tires and it's a bit tall, so I can see why you're unhappy with your axle)
I dont really tow too much except a heavy bass boat. i can't keep traction for nothing on a rainy day or when i get down on it at a slow speed. It's not really a work truck but more of a sport truck. I know that might sound funny but i hardly ever work in it Im just looking for better performance and drivability when I wanna step on it ya know? I dont want my tires to spin. I want em to stick epescially when i get the 302 in there. I dont want a hot rod but just a little more than stock. also, the rear end "hops" when i get down on it. I mean it hops real bad. what do you guys recommmend i do?
If you think you have wheelspin issues now, wait until you have shorter gears and an automatic...
What kind of tires do you have? If you have hard, skinny tires, they are going to spin, especially in the wet. You may want to do some tire & wheel shopping and upgrade to a wider wheel & a wider tire with a better traction rating. Of course, the softer tires wear quicker.
Wheel hop is the result of the springs winding up due to the axle twisting. They reach a point where they won't bend any more, then they spring back against the input torque of the engine. This causes the wheel to hop off the ground, spin up to speed and then hit the ground at high speed, starting the process over again, each time more violent than the prior. This is a quick path to broken parts.
Shocks, staggard shocks, an extra leaf or leaves in the springs, & traction bars are the items used to tame wheel hop. (of course, the 4 bar suspension set up and beyond can be used, but that's on another planet)
For now, you should be able to apply less digital pressure to and use the delicatessen touch on the loud pedal.
