hi all. last week i blew my pass header to pieces. so i figured scrap the cast and go shorty headers. found a set no problem. figured while it's getting shipped to me i'll pull the old ones and clean the edge of the block before the snow flies. then i couldn't get the bolts off that hold the pipe to the manifold, couldn't get my impact in, tried long bars, adjustables, heat, lubes. finally got mad and cut the pipes so i could get it all out. then repeated on the other side. now i'm wondering how much of the exaust i need to put back on too drive about 1 mile to the shop that's putting the new duals on? i cut the pipes about 3' from the engine, and could put that on easy enough, or i could try to weld the pipes back together then try to fit it in the truck. the exaust that the p o put in is off of several different cars, cut, blocked, and wired up.(thank god for coathangers.lol)
do you think just the headers and 3' of pipe would be ok for 1 mile? or should i bother with the rest. i found a 2 1/4 -1 7/8 that will fit over and inside the pipes, but don't know if it's worth the time to do it.
thanks
mark
i drove about 3 miles to the muffler shop with just headers. it sounded like a dragster it was so freakin loud. the whole neighborhood was just echoing of a s s holeness from me. lol
I drove my truck with manifolds and just a couple inches of pipe 18 miles to the muffler shop. Wish I had brought earplugs with me. Just run long tube headers one the race car. No problems.
Dittos on the others: It will be loud in the cab but you wont hurt anything.

yeah whats the deal with that rumor? i have heard it so many times that running just headers can hurt your valves or something? that a tiny bit of backpressure is healthy for the motor?
if you run just headers for a long period of time you can hurt the engine, and its presisley becouse of the back pressure issues, but on the short drive you'll be fine.
