When you unbolted the FPR from the side of the fuel filter housing you had to pull the FPR away from the housing. There was a white plastic piece with an o-ring on it that sticks out of the FPR and goes into a hole on the fuel filter housing. This white piece has a screen on it that needs to be cleaned. The white piece will pull out of the FPR so that you can clean both sides of the screen.
OK, no, I did not pull that out. I pulled on it and twisted it slightly testing to see if it was supposed to come out. Since it did not move easily and I did not want to force it, I just cleaned it from the outside. Also, after cleaning it I blew through the screen and it did not feel as free-flowing as I thought it should. (Plus it left a nasty taste in my mouth -- I did not want to use compressed air.)
That's the second time I didn't clean something because I couldn't remove it easily and I was afraid of breaking it. I'm gonna have to quit *****-footing around this truck!
BTW, I stretched the spring in the FPR and that did not help the fuel pressure. It didn't feel weak at all, either. I'll get back at the FPR tomorrow. Right now I'm up to my cheeks installing gauges.
When your working on your truck if you have a question, stop and post. You never know when someone will be on here with an answer. If the spring is not weak (I know that you do not want to hear this) it could be either you FPR needs repalcing or your fuel pump is getting weak and cannot pressurize the fuel to a high enough pressure. Good luck on the gauges. Keep us posted.

I usually do that when I'm working on my bike, I'll stop and go to one of my own biker forums. (www.cootsonscoots.com is my public forum.) I don't mind oil and grease on my keyboard, but I'm kinda hesitant with diesel fuel on me. Yeah, I shoulda stopped and asked.

I just watched a fuel pump go on Ebay for about $86. Can't you rebuild the FPR's?

Thanks. Got the gauges mounted in the A pillar and the lights hooked up. Tomorrow I'll get the sensors installed and everything hooked up.

Wow, I didn't know that was obscene... I thought it was like, cat-footing around, like walking softly as opposed to stepping boldly...
Replaced my busted fuel line today, took the FPR completely apart and soaked it in carburetor cleaner. Reassembled it and reinstalled it. Still only 40 lbs. on fuel pressure.
I don't know how to tell if it's going bad, but I do know that you need to have the motor clocked a certain degree to not let the little piston fall in the motor. Time for a refresher from the pump guru's. IIRC, you take the pump loose, and rotate the motor until the cam lobe raises the pump out of it's bore. Then it should be good. And a new carter is gonna run about $90 IIRC.
Cody I believe you are correct. Loosen the pump but do not remove the bolts. hand turn the motor till the pump raises. remove the pump while being sure the pushrod doesn't fall in the motor.
What I would look for once it is out is a garbage can. If you went thru all that to get it out then put a new one in there. Usually if they are going bad they will seep fuel out then fail alltogether.
Thats a good question. If you find out the answer let me know. I havent read anything about how to "test" the FP in a bench or something like that. I suspect that mine was OK and the leak came from the fuel lines, but as Neal said, I just change for a new one and thats it.
Also Ill wait to see the fuel pressure after you do the change. I hope that the FP is the culprit of the low pressure.
