need advice

hey guys i need a little advice from you more expirenced ebayers and such internet transactions. About a week ago I saw an ad on craigslist for a 2004 John Deere 2210 compact tractor, the seller is asking $3100.00 for it including shippping. here is what she emailed to me

First of all I want to tell you that the 2004 John Deere 2210 is still available and the price of $3,100.00 includes all the shipping costs and insurance, so you won't have to pay any extra charges. I know that there are numerous offers on the web and I'm glad that you choose to contact me regarding your willingness to purchase. The tractor looks and works like new. It has only 235 pampered hours on it and it will come with all the attachments (53" front end quick attach loader, 62" mid mount pto mower, 3 point imatch ballast box), all the service records, receipts and manuals.
I have opened a farm two years ago in Eugene, OR but it is not working anymore and I decided with my partner to cover some money by selling all the units that we have. I hope that you will understand my situation. E-mail me if you are interested in the purchase.

this is the first email from her, i then asked her if i could see it before i buy and would rather pick-up instead of shipping, and then emailed this...

Hi again,

Thanks for getting back to me. The tractor is already at the shipping company in Eugene, OR sealed and ready for the shipping. I have a contract with eBay so this deal must go through them. According with eBay you have 15 days from the time you receive the tractor to inspect it and decide if you want to keep it or not (not your case). I will ship it from here on my expense through DAS (Dependable Auto Shippers) and it will take no more then 2-3 days top (depending on your exact location).
Here is how it will work:

1.First of all I will need the following details from you:

- Full Name
- Full Shipping Address

2. After I will receive the details from you, I will forward them to eBay.
3. After they will process your info, they will send us both invoices. The invoice will send you the details on how to make a refundable payment.
4. eBay will contact me and I will ship the tractor to you.
After you receive the tractor you will have 15 days to test, verify and do whatever you need to the tractor. If you will buy, then I will receive the payment details from eBay so that I can pick up the money. If you wish to make the transaction, please send me the necessary info so that we can proceed.

sorry for such a long post but would greatly appreciate ya'lls input, i don't want to get scamed.

DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT deal with these people. Report them to Craigslist and they will remove the ad. As soon as they say anything about the item already being at the shipper's you know it's a scam. Ebay has nothing to do with Craigslist and can guarantee nothing. Here is a way to prove it:

Tell them that since delivery is guaranteed by Ebay, then the item must also be for sale on Ebay. Tell them to send you the item number and you will buy it. They will come back and tell you that the auction was ended early because someone did not pay or something like that. Also, notice from their message, it seems that English is not their first language. I have already been through this very thing on Craigslist when I was looking for a truck. Fortunately, I knew how to spot the scam. I will dig up the emails we exchanged and you will see the similarity.

thanks for the advice. i thought something just didnt sound right thats why i had asked them to see it and pick it up. i was wondering since they tried to involve ebay maybe it would be more legit but you have made a good point with it being in auction on ebay.

I wish I could find those emails....

The price is how they bait you. This guy had a later model SD that he said he would sell for like $4K or something. Same thing... it's already at the shippers ready to go, shipping included in the price. Except that I had 5 days to drive the truck before I had to "contact Ebay to release the money."

Ok, found those emails. Hope I don't get in trouble here for posting them... it's kind of long. First I emailed him in response to his ad:

FORD F250 XLT CREW CAB DIESEL - $4000 (dallas / fort worth)
To: sale-861213237@craigslist.org
Date: Friday, October 3, 2008, 6:41 PM

A few questions:

What year is it?
Is it 4WD?
How many miles?
Where can I see the truck?
Can I see more pictures?

Thanks,

Then his response, in excellent English I might add. Wonder what the chances are that David Kennedy is not his real name?

Hello,

Nice to meet you, yes is sell my 2000 Ford F-250 4x4 is in very good condition! It has never been wrecked. VIN: 1FTNW21F0YEA32089, Transmission - Automatic, Exterior color Black, Interior color Gray, 159,598 miles, Fuel type Diesel, Engine: 8 CYLINDERS 7.3 Liters, Vehicle title Clear. Options - 4-Wheel drive, Air conditioning, Cruise control, Power locks, Power windows. My wife was recently promoted so we had to move in Montana . We brought the car with us. Besides, there are lot of things which have priority now, so, this car has to go. As you probably noticed, the price is rather low 4,000 Dollars for you if you will buy it today or tomorrow .Due to the fact I am very busy with my work and I don't stay too much at home, the car is already to the shipping company and will be delivered from there very fast, shipping cost is included in price. The transaction will be made under eBay's buyer protection plan. So, please reply back with your full name and shipping address if you are really interested in purchasing this car so we can start the arrangements!

My best wishes!

David Kennedy

Now our responses back and forth, mine in blue, his in red. By now I already know it's a scam:

Well, that sounds very nice. However, I would prefer to drive up to Dallas and see it tomorrow. Can you provide a contact number and address where I may see the truck? Thank you.

Hello Walker ,

I am sorry to disappoint but I have just moved over here and I don't have a phone as I am still waiting the for my personal documents as a resident here. I am not allowed to install a phone without those papers. We must communicate by email if is not a problem. Let me know what your intentions are. Since I presume you are not familiar with eBay's Vehicle Purchase Protection Program, I have briefly described the eBay transaction steps below:

1. Buyer, seller reach an agreement (price and delivery conditions)
2. Buyer sends money to eBay.
3. eBay confirms to seller that the amount has been received.
4. Seller performs the required services (shipping, insurance).
5. Buyer accepts delivery and informs eBay about the acceptance.
6. eBay releases the money to seller.

As you can see, you will receive the car BEFORE any money is released to me. You will get the chance to inspect it, test drive it and everything you like while your money is still safely held in eBay's account. ONLY after you confirm to eBay that you agree with the vehicle, they will release the money to me.

If, for some reason, you disagree with the car (I assure you that is NOT going to happen since my FORD F-250 is in IMMACULATE condition inside and out) it will be shipped back to me on MY EXPENSE and eBay will send you your money back.

If you wish to proceed further, I will need your complete name and address so I can start the transaction with eBay's Vehicle Purchase Protection Program.

Let me know if we can get the ball rolling.

Regards,

So then, the vehicle is on Ebay as well as craigslist. That is great. Just give me the Ebay Item number and we can proceed with the transaction from there.

Hello Jude ,

Thank you for reply and the car is still for sale. The car was posted Craig's List and eBay . I ended my auction because someone wanted to buy it but I never heard from him again and it turns out to be a dead beat. The will arrive at your home in 3 days and you have 5 days to inspect/test drive it.In all this time your money is safe in eBay account. If you are agree with the car and you want to buy it AFTER then eBay send the money to me.If you don't agree with the car and you don't want to buy it eBay send the car back to me.Think about this you have a free car for 5 days.So if you want to do this please send me your full name and full shipping address so i can contact eBay to ship the car to you.

Thank you

After I forwarded the emails to Craigslist and reported it, I sent him a final message:

Dear Mr. Kennedy,

Unfortunately for you, your scam is very transparent. Why do you people all think that Americans are so stupid? Do you really think that anyone will believe that you will sell them a 2000 model 4WD F250 for $4000 with free shipping to anywhere in the United States? You are probably not aware, so I will tell you: Carfax already has one report of this vehicle being involved in a scam, and now they have two. Also, I have reported your listing to Craigslist and I will be filing a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission and the Internet Fraud Complaint Center. I simply asked you to give me an address where I may see the truck in Dallas tomorrow. If you can do that, then I will not need to file these last two complaints. If the truck is as you describe, I will buy it. Tomorrow.

I never heard back from him.

I basically went through the same thing for a VW TDI for the wife......but the guy claimed to be in the AirForce and was transferred to Brazil......said the car would be transported to the nearest base for me......I asked for a pic or a copy of the title and he never responded

I went throught something similar when I was try to sell my 93 f150. I had it listed on autotrader and someone emailed me with an offer and said that they had a check for 10000 or something and I was selling the truck for 3500 and all I had to do was send the the change and they would come pick the truck up. HAHAHAHA I wish I could have seen teh guy to laugh in his face. The problem is some people will actually fall for it. Its pretty sad we have to deal with stuff like that.
