no heat

hello i am new on here. i have a 97 f150 4x4 4.6 automatic. it does not blow heat. i changed the thermostat because the engine does not seem to get hot enough. even after the new thermostat the engine takes forever to get hot and the system does not seem to pressurize. the heater hoses are not getting hot. after 20 minutes of running in my driveway i can hold onto upper radiator hose for minutes. thank you for your help.

Sounds like water pump not working. Engine should get hot though. Is water pump leaking? Temp gauge working?

Welcome to FTE jvunk! Did you replace the thermostat with the stock temperature rating? Good luck!

I have infared temp. gauge. The engine is only getting up 195 degrees, after like a half hr of running. Upper radiator hose is hot while the lower hose is not.

Both hoses should be hot after that amount of time running. You may have a bad water pump. Have you flushed the system lately? It's possible that you have air in the system that needs to be purged. Is the degas tank full?

no I have not flushed the system. I was thinking about the water pump as well but there is no other evidence of a bad water pump. It almost seems like it is running too cold. If the water pump was bad it seems like the engine would run hot. How does the coolant flow to the heater core? I am used to the old engines where it is off the water pump.

the top hose is hot meaning there is hot water out of the thermostat into the radiator. the bottom hose is cooler, meaning the radiator is cooling the fluid as it should. the heater hoses are cool, meaning there is a problme with that. you have no flow thru the heater or hoses. i would take the hoses off and blow thru the heater core and the hoses and check flow. jumper a 3 ft hose across the inlet and outlet tubes to the heater and see that the new hoses gets hot and the flow problem is not the motor. that will tell you the heater is plugged.
