I just installed the BD Boost Builder in my truck and took it for a quick spin. I'm running the stock plus tune from Spartan along with it right now. It seems to have a little more bottom end and definitely builds boost a lot quicker. The throttle seems to be a lot crisper than before and is easier to drive. Max boost that I saw with this tune is 29 and wouldn't go past it. I'm going to put my Innovative tune in later on tonight or sometime tomorrow and do some testing with a hot tune to let everyone know how it works.
Ok, I just got back from running it with my Innovative tune. The way this tune worked without the boost builder was it has a converter lockup on acceleration and it would lockup with about 21psi and then on the floor would run 26-27psi out of it in every gear. With the boost builder in the truck it now goes to 31psi well before the converter locks up and holds steady at 31psi all the way to the floor. It also helps with the driveability of this tune, this tune is the smoothest hot tune I've ever run in my truck and its actually smoother with this installed. 69cj, I'll turn the truck back to stock tonight and take it for a spin like that also and get back to everyone.
Great info, do u think it makes enough boost to cause any problems with stock heads? Im
runing a 100 hp tune with no problems so far.
Stock pickups can have head gasket problems. I blew mine out with a 175 hp Spartan tune and installed ARP head studs in it to help it from going out again. With the Spartan hybrid race and ultra comp I can spike my boost all the way to 35psi. I'm also gonna try this boost builder with them sometime. But the tune I tried and got 31 out of was the same tune that gave me the dyno numbers in my sig. I think holding at 31psi is actually a safe boost number. Also as I stated in my first post here, the stock plus tune achieved 29psi out of it with the boost builder and without it would only run about 24 or 25. I even tried to spike the boost by just nailing it from a dead stop and it never went over those numbers so actually I think it is a really safe product to have and to me it seems like a good deal for the money. Its a very cheap upgrade and really helps with the lag. The difference in lag is noticeable in both tunes I've tried and I'm gonna keep trying a few others and see how well it behaves. Oh and I ordered mine from Eric at Innovative for $80.75 so that should save you a little bit of money instead of the $85.00 that is seems to be everywhere else.
I just got done running my pickup on stock tuning with the boost builder and it for the most part acts just like the stock plus tune from spartan did with it. It'll go straight to 29psi no matter how hard you hit it from a stop and it feels to have more power all across the powerband. The driveability is greatly improved over stock. I think it would be a nice little investment for someone just looking to get a little more out of their truck without a tuner or box installed.
