You're exactly right. I do it on my F-150, V6 Ford Escape and Lincoln Town Car. I was nervous the first time but it works like a charm. I crank mine until the oil light goes off. Never a sound on startup. I understand the PCM cuts off the fuel to the injectors.

is this hard on the truck in anyway though?

Most of the bearing wear happens before the oil light goes out. If you wonder about cranking the engine with the throttle floored to keep it from starting, simply do it now before you change the oil. You will find that the engine will not fire and it will crank long enough to pressurize the oil system.
