7? 390

I think the 390 in my 72 is from a newer vehicle. Any idea where to look for the engine date code?

See if you can find the date code for the heads - that might tell you something too - matter of fact, what is the casting number near the plug holes? (just curious)

Also, what part numbers are visible on everything else, including the intake?

If anything is a "D3" or higher, you know something's been changed

It's also upside down looking at it from underneath. Besides that and a blurry and paint filled date code it can be hard to read. There is 2 dots under the first number which can add to the fun if it is a 72 casting. Anyway it's a number/letter/number(s) sequence. Ex... 2L11 is 72-Nov-11th. On the heads it's between the center 2 valve springs.
