Odd noise in dash when cold.

This is a '08 Mariner which is the same as an Escape (I guess). When this thing is cold it has a tick in the dash that sounds like it is coming from the middle. It sounds for all the world like an old speedometer cable "thump" once the rig is warmed up it goes away. I don't think they use a mechanical speedometer anymore. Ideas appreciated. I am taking it back to the dealer on Wednesday, but I would like to have some glimmer of what it might be for the "couldn't reproduce the problem" response.

Not sure if this is helpful or not, but on my Father's GMC Envoy, the gauges on the dash all make faint ticking noises as they change reading. It may be worth a shot to try getting one of the gauges to change value, like giving it a bit of gas to make the tach change.
