I've got to agree. The only reason I'd bother with bigger wheels is to fit bigger rotors. I think it looks goofy to have 20+ wheels and 11" rotors or drums behind them. Now if they had 18" rotors behind the 20" wheels, then I could see my way to liking it. However on a 4 wheel drive, I'd be scared of limbs, rocks, culverts and suck damaging the fancy big wheels.
but i am serious about this, I love my current X that I use for work, and want a second one for leisure time, I live in the CHI burbs roads are decent, you only live once
As a rule, wheel diameter doesn't effect the height of the vehicle. Tire diameter does. Your stock tire is probably about 31", if not you should be able to fit a 31" under it. With a 27" wheel you will have 4" tire available, 2" on each side. So you are looking at something with a very low aspect ratio. Aspect ratio is the percentage of the width that is the height above the wheel. You have to double the number the aspect ratio gives to determine height.
So pick a tire and wheel at is around 31". Then you can start messing with the backspacing/offset issues. Just like in picking lifts, pick your tire first.
i have 22" wheels with 325/50/22 toyo tires and they are almost 35" tall and 13" wide. i dont think it looks goofy. i think a 28" wheel with a nice tall 38" tire would be a nice combo but he would have to lift it several inches to get them to fit.
heres a thought. just tires.....325/35/28 are 13" wide and 37" tall. will fit an excursion with a 4" lift. oh, tires are in the $1050- $1285 range. AND THATS EACH!!!!!!
thanks you for all the posts, so I am to asume that overall tires size is the important thing when choosing a rim/tire combo.
I would prefer 26"+, any idea what the maximum size inches of total rim/tire combo can be with my stock X 4x4 with no more mods? I prefer to not get my truck lifted and keep it stock.
i have looked all over the net ( hours and hours ) and have found very few excursions on 24" or bigger rims, anyone got any pics they could post? thanks -
