I have had that issue before. It was GPR and had no probs last winter . Was a lovely -35 C and used a block heater.

I also switched to Stanadyne Performance Formula as my fuel additive. People swear by it up here.

I would check that block heater out too , if there were no other problems except the glowplugs it should have started being plugged in for 4 1/2 hrs.

Keep the ether away from the engine. The glow plugs obviously ain't working. If they were, she could have easily blown up the engine.
