Coming back from the JY today, finally found some items I was looking for, all happy, just cruising home with the straight pipes making noise, and a big doe jumps right in front of me! Slammed on the binders, locked the rears up, but still hit it. Pulled over to check over the truck, it pushed the front bumper back slightly to one side, and put a little crack in my grille. The old 77F250 highboy came out all right. Can't say the same for the deer though. Feel bad for it, but if I was in my ZX2, it would have totalled. Just had to rant
Last time I hit a deer with the 1973, it cost me a $20 headlight. It did crack the grille, but not enough to need replacing yet.
Also been rear ended with my 1973. bent the rear bumper slightly. However, the S-10 was totalled. Very well made truks the 1973-1979. So are the 1967-1972's as well.
I hit a deer once with a 91 Chevy Cavalier doing 60mph. $2500 worth of damage. I know when my truck is done, I'm going to either have to get a really strong grill guard or just not drive at night or dawn with it. Of course, I see more during the day time hours, but at least easier to see than at night or early dawn. Ever since I hit one, I am very paranoid about driving at night.
a little off topic, but close, these trucks are so tough when my dad taught me to drive we used bessy, he said theres not much damage you can do to her, i was 12 and thought it was hilarious that my father could walk across the hood and no dents because hes not a small guy. and i haven't hit any deer but me and some buddies just ran her up to canada and came down with 3 BIG bucks in the back, borde control with weapons and animals is a pain btw.
I say almost 4 times very close time to hit deers in my Dad's 2001 F250.
We just drive 45 mph then saw fast deer try jump but we hit brake so hard. No hit but lucky. But deer go to other side so lucky that we saw and hit brake fast.
40 MPH at impact, 4+ pt buck. It blew out the plastic grille, tweaked the bumper into the front tire, almost punched thru the condensor, dented and blew out the front seam on the hood, broke the mounting tabs off of the headlights, and the rear view mirror fell off. Had I not had the push bumpers, I would have been walking home.
