I wouldn't buy one outright for the kind of money they go for, but the price was right on this one...I was pulling the drivetrain out of a diesel truck to swap in a gas motor and was told could have any and everything I wanted out of it, so I took the whole drivetrain, radiator to rear end and that included the GV unit. He didn't want it. It's a divorced setup and I have a bunch of driveshaft odds 'n ends around so I was able to scrap it together for nothing more than price of a couple of U-joints. And I've since bought a T19 adapter used from another FTE member so eventually I'll bolt the thing right to the tranny and have a one-piece driveshaft.
I don't really like the way the thing shifts, but for the price, I can live with it...
i didnt have any towing issues with my np435 but i can certainly see the concern. With my 4.9l the power band and torque curve are different so with my gearing it may just fall in a great range for the highway. i use 4th gear as low as 35mph in town. 3rd to 4th is always a jump
If you plan on swapping in a 4-speed, you might want to consider a T19 instead. I put one in my '68 and love it.
The T19 came in a close-ratio and a wide-ratio version, I used a close-ratio tranny from an '86 F250 diesel. It has no granny low, and all four forward gears are synchronized. First gear ratio is 4.02:1.
When I used the '68 for towing with the NP435, I really could feel the huge gap between 3rd and 4th, especially when pulling a hill. I'd start to run out of steam in 4th and have to drop to 3rd, then the engine would be screaming. Go back to 4th and it's lugging. With the T19, the spacing between the gears is much more even. It shifts much more smoothly than the NP435 as well. It's nice to drive with it being a true 4-speed with all four gears useable. So far, I've never really needed the granny low and don't miss it a bit
I know this is an old thread, but I've just made the same swap (NP435 to close-ratio T19) & I couldn't agree more.
I'm in a hilly area &, while I know the 435 is mechanically excellent, it was really a dog to drive with the wide gear spacings & notchy shifting.
I couldn't be more pleased with the c/r T19 - smooth shifting & best of all, four well-spaced, useable gears
I have a np435 in my 1970f250 with 3.73 gears in the dana 60. I am at 4000rpms in 4th gear doing 45mph. I would highly recommend putting higher gears in the rear end if using this transmission on the street
