NP435 variation

From the sound my transmission is making, i will soon be in need if a new NP435. I have a 400, NP435, and a married NP205.

I know these transmissions were used in a variety of makes and models over the years. What will and wont fit my truck?

Will a dodge fit?
Will a 2wd one work if i swap the tail housing?
Do years matter?

I haven't dropped 3rd just yet, so i do have a bit of time to shop around for a cheap one. Its just making some very bad noises.

Try this for background info. .The New Process 435 Transmission - Novak Conversions

By my read, a 2WD version will work only if it were a divorced 205. A married 205 uses that connector housing but it won't bolt to the 2WD pattern. It's gotta be a 4WD-spec NP435.

Rebuild it?!

The NP 235 is pretty common and readily available as a rebuild/re-manufactured tranny. Cost seems reasonable. A Google search will show quite a few options. I've never purchased one as the last NP 235 I messed with outlasted 2 engines and the frame of the truck it was bolted to (rust).

Rebuilding the np435 is not impossible. I was able to do it with basic tools and a feeler gauge set when I was a teenager.

Order a bearing, seal, and gasket set, strip it apart, taking pictures while your at it. Then order whatever is messed up that isn't included with the bearing and seal kit, like shafts and gears and forks and rods...

Oh, and locate a repair manual and read it first before doing ANYTHING!

Rebuilding the trans is an option, but from the looks of it a used one will be cheaper. Having it rebuilt at the local trans shop will cost $600 plus $300 in parts.

From what I am reading, I think the synchro is on its way out for 3rd and 4th. Is that accessible with the top cover removed and still in the truck?

Trans and transfer case has to come out to replace the 3-4 synchro, unfortunately. The trans output shaft has to slide out the back of the case to get clearance for the synchro to come off.

Have it rebuilt. A used one might not last much longer than the one you have. Have it rebuilt and be done with it for another 30 years. These are basically indestructible other than synchros. Are you capable of pulling it out and putting it back in? Find a heavy truck shop. I have one in my area called truck parts specialists. If you can pull it they usually will rebuild it. They rebuilt mine in an afternoon. Then you know what you have.

Thank you for those diagrams!

What would be symptoms of the synchros going out? It still shifts fine and is not popping out of gears, it just makes some nasty sounds.

I do know of a big rig shop and a few 4x4 shops in it now that you mention it. I'll give them a call this week and see what they quote. I have no questions that I can get the trans out. I am just not sure about rebuilding it since there are so many parts and I haven't done that before. Rebuilding one in an afternoon is pretty impressive.

I'm mainly concerned with the trans lasting another 2 years to get me through college. After that I have my sights set on a ZF or NV swap!

Have you tried to adjust the clutch before you drop and rebuild the trans?

Also ck/insp all you bushing's, levers and clutch linkage components.

It might be YOUR shifting technique? Have someone else drive it while you ride shotgun and see?

Yes I know that is not the best feeling in the world, especially a standard shift vehicle that is yours.

Your post says it shifts fine, but is noisy in 3rd gear? Just 3rd gear? If you put the trans in neutral, with the engine running and the clutch engaged (pedal up) is there any noise?
