Replacing Windshield seal

How hard is it to replace the windshield seal in an 84 F-150? Rain water runs down the inside on occasion. don't want it to rust on me.

I haven't done one myself, but watching the windshield installer doesn't make me want to try. You could try removing the trim and adding some RTV to the leaking area. My windshield leaked when I got my truck but it was cracked pretty bad too so I just had it replaced.

That's a urethane seal on the windshield. To do it right it is best to remove the windshield, clean up the old and reseal. You have to cut around the old seal to get the W/S out. Of course it might break..... (don't ask how I know). Also best to put in new molding retaining clips. I had insurance on mine so that helped. Get an idea of cost from local glass places. Sometimes they have guys that might want to pick up a few extra $$. Good luck.

It is very easy to crack the windshield taking it out. I accidently chipped the edge, and while it seemed largely harmless, a slight flex and it shot a couple inches, and one more time, and it went completely across the windsheild. If you can find a glass place to do it reasonably, I would highly recommend it, they have all the toys to do it. I tried sealing with the flowable silicone, and it just continued to leak. Now that I have a new windshield, and proper seal, it no longer leaks...

I had the windshield replaced for about $125. They came to the house and did it in the driveway. New seal and now I can see too!

I've done quite a few and they are very tricky if you don't know what you are doing.

Your best bet is to have a pro do it.

I would go ahead and get a new one installed. You may not realize it, but as they get older, they wear out. If you look close, if it's worn out it will look like it's been sandblasted, and when it gets really bad, oncoming headlights at night have starbursts around them when you look though the windshield.

Keep in mind a LOT of Pro's WILL NOT replace your used windshield if they break it.

Most only cover breakage if you buy it from them and they aren't that expensive to begin with.

yeah, my windshield is a bit cloudy and hard to see out of at night on occasion. Probably better left to a professional.
