My blower motor in my 84 is terribly weak. Not sure if any of these trucks had real strong blowers. Is there a way to make it stronger. Give it more current? Maybe install one from later model truck?
Well, it puts out air. Doesn't sound like anything is holding it back. And all the speeds work. It just doesn't put out the amount of air as a newer model vehicle. I don't have another truck of similar year to compare it to. I'm mostly concerned about the A/C. I'm thinking if I get a larger volumn of air to move through the cab it would "feel" better, know what I mean? It's like on my dad's late model Dodge, I think you could fill balloons with the amount of air that fan moves.
My 80 was like that, and by digging all the pencils and and junk out beneath the windshield, it helped the defrost a lot. Then when I was doing something else, I took the A/C box off in the engine compartment, and found more junk in the duct, and I cleaned the A/C evaporator core fins, and after that, the heater would run me out of the truck.
So it's safe to say, there is not a design problem with the airflow or the heat in these trucks.
ya, i had terrible air flow in my 81, so after disassembly i found i had an enormous rats nest in my a/c evaporator and after cleaning all that crap out, i have great flow! now if i could just get the right thermostat in there, i could maybe have a warm drive for a change...
ya, kinda like today. i got a 180 stat in there now and it blows somewhat warm air, so i think a piece of cardboard in front of the radiator will take care of the rest of it.
i looked everything over on my truck, but in the summer time, when i use it to pull w/, it would have a little problem w/ overheating. put me in a 160 degree and problem solved, ran right at operating temp. now that it's cold outside, i can't get the stinker to warm up for nothing or nobody! everything is in working order, it's just that the engine is pretty tired. i plan on running stock 195 when i overhaul her and put in an actual guage w/ numbers on it so i can see exactly what it's doing...
I imagine it's time to clean out the ducts and blower housing anyway. Warming up in winter with a lower than stock thermostat can be a problem. I'm gonna put a bigger radiator in mine with the 195 thermostat, that way it will warm up fine, but have a larger capacity in summer time to be able handle the heat.
