Ok I have a 1980 f-100 with a 302 in it. carb. not fi. It was running rough so i replaced fuel filter, plugs, wires, cap and rotor. now it ideals perfectly but when I go to drive it is real sluggish and looses power to the point where it won't accelerate at all. it doesn' stall or act like it stalls, I'm just not sure if it would be a timing issue or a too much/too little fuel. as far as timing the marks are long gone as well.
You need to clean up the damper so you can see the marks. While checking the timing, you can also rev the engine and make sure the distributor is advancing the timing like it should. You can also plug and unplug the vacuum line to the dist while the engine is revved and see if the timing jumps back and forth.
engine idling I hold up some steel wool to the damper to clean it off, then shut the engine down and take some white-out to the timing marks.
my truck is an `86 EFI 5.0, and so are my mustangs, so I just mark 0*, 10*, and 20*. Mine like to run best at 14* with copper plugs at stock gap, but YMMV
check your acclerator pump on the carb.i had this happen to me once, car would idle but took forever to get up to speed.just another thing to check good luck
Thanks I will try those ideas next chance I get to play wih it. Also, I drove it a bit this evening and when it does the hesitating I was mentioning, there is also a noice I forgot about which is kindof like a clunking, knocking, backfire sound. Not as loud as a back fire though just am odd sound and only when I try to accelerate.

If that noise is the engine backfiring up in the aircleaner, then the other poster may be correct, and the accelerator pump may be bad.
If you want to check it, with the engine off, take the aircleaner off, and while looking down the carb throat, push the throttle open. As soon as the throttle moves, you should see two strong streams of gas pour into the engine. If the streams hesitate and are weak dribbles, then that's your problem.
Ok checked the accelerator pump and that is good. Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated. To recap, when you hit the gas the truck starts to sputter a bit and I hear this clunking, knocking, backfiring noise from under the hood. Only makes this noise when you step on the gas. New plugs wires, cap, rotor, and fuel filter. Thanks in advance.
It could be a bad rotor. After I bought my F100 I did a complete tune up on it, and it would idle, but if I revved it any it would blow flames out the pipe and would run real crappy. Turns out the brand new rotor I had just bought was bad. (It took me a week to ever figure that out, and a very charged bottom of my truck cuz of the straight pipe dump underneatht the floorboard)

You might have accidentally put the Spark Plug Wires on wrong too. The firing order, (I'm pretty sure) is 1,5,4,2,6,3,7,8. and the distributor runs clockwise.
Mine is a 1981 F-150
could also be the plugs themselves - i use to have a 95 aspire that would not take anything but motorcraft plugs other wise it would run hesitant and attempt to stall, but wouldn't. Starter coil finaly finished that car(glad to be rid of it). Just a thought.
