If I let my truck idle until it reaches full operating temp, it blue smokes really bad when you drive down the road a few miles but if you let it idle until the temp hand starts to move then take off it's not very noticable. The truck has 51000 miles, could there be a problem or just the nature of the beast. The truck does have some surging while towing up hills.
Thanks.
Letting it idle more than a minute can possibly cause more problems than it could ever solve. Unless you have the high idle capability (1200 to 1250 rpm), just don't do it. In generally, all you have to do is drive it easy until you reach operating temperatures. Personally I rarely let it idle more than a few seconds (but then I hardly ever see temps below the high 30's). Just be aware that your truck will not be fully heat saturated when the coolant temp gauge first reaches normal. It takes a few minutes longer still from what I read.
what your explaining is not normal and that would mean your truck has a problem. i'm not a mech. but we do have some techs and really smart ppl on this site so hopefully they can point you in the right direction. your truck should be under warranty?? maybe take it in?
Sound like something sticking. Mine had a bad actuator on the VGT that was causing the surge. It was replaced and things have been fine since. Not sure about the smoking when cold not sure if a sticking set of turbo vanes would cause this to happen.
