Consumer reports December 2008

Horray!!!!!!!!!! Ford finally gets it's just due.

We all know and have discussed how biased Consumer Reports is towards Japanese automakers.

It must have been painful for them to publish this article.

The head line, Ford leads the domestics. The artical goes on to say that all three ford divisions continue to pull away from the rest of the Detroit automakers. Almost all Ford models are now average or better and are on par with good Japanese automobiles for the exception of some truck based models. They're actually referring to the V-8 Explorer and Mountaineer.

Chrysler and some high end German models didn't fair all that well.

Additionally, the 6.4L SD 4x4 didn't fair well either.

I paraphrased the article so no one gets thier feelings hurt.

Excellent job Ford employees!!!!!!!!!

Tim

You might be able to find it in: www.ConsumerReports.org

Go to cars, then reliability ratings and the article below that.

It's on page 63 of the Dec 2008 issue.

Glad the effort's been noticed.

Honestly, I've never felt that CR is all that biased. My personal experience correlates pretty closely to theirs, and when they screwed up (ie Toyota), they owned up. Trust me, the mfrs think they're pretty accurate.

I agree with ya mistrtoad.

Both before when ford didnt get good ratings, and now that they are getting better ratings.

Although CR has never been *perfect,* I have found them to be very predictive of problems in vehicles that I've owned, both good and bad, that their surveys said were good and bad respectively.

If a friend asks me about what car they should be looking at, it's much less of a risk if I recommend something that is average or better in reliability per CR. A woman at work is currently waiting for a dealer to get a Ford Fusion (4 cyl) in her color choice--I strongly recommended the car, and I would not feel good if she were to have problems with it.

I have also "sold" a bunch of people on Taurus/Sables of the prior generation, because they were *such* a good deal as 2-year old lease returns. My sis-in-law's Sable is being driven by our nephew (110k miles I think), and it's been a good car for them. Another friend just got her '00 Taurus totaled at 137k miles, and it may well have saved her life as well as giving her very little trouble.

You go, Ford. Let's hope their new-gen small cars can maintain the quality image.

George

I've always taken CR with a grain of salt. I've never trusted anything they say whether I agree with it or not. How else can a Japanese nameplate rate far higher than an American nameplate when they are made on the same line from the same parts? This applies to cars, appliances and everything else that is done the same way. I've had excellent results with many vehicles and appliances that CR has blasted and rated very low.

Ford has been focusing on quality for a couple of years now and it has been paying off. It may take a long time for the driving public to accept this fact due to the percieved notion of Asian automobiles being better than American . I can't wait to see the new models comming from Ford over the next couple years. I think Ford will prove to everyone that they can compete with the Japanese automakers, but it may take time.

You know, just today I was cruising the auto lots, and saw the new F150. I almost had a tear run down my eye because of how beautiful it was, and how well engineered it looked. Granted, I have never driven an 09, but I have never wanted to drive one more than right now. I think the 2009 F150 is going to do a world of good for Ford. GO FORD GO!

That's good! Obviously I don't know if that will be enough to "save" Ford. I really think making vehicles people will buy is another part of the equation. On the positive side though I saw the new Mustang and Fusion and I would buy both if I had the money because I think they both look good!
