ICP Location ?

I'm having some minor surge issues with the X. I'm thinking possible ICP replacement in near future although I have not seen the p2285 code. I have an '04 X with an '03 motor with 72,000 miles and I'm trying to pin point the exact ICP location if located on top of the motor. With respect to the glow plug control module located on the top front of the passenger side valve cover, where would the ICP be located if it were mounted in that area? Mine is probably located under the turbo but I thought I would look on top first before resigning myself to the fact that I have to go under the turbo to change the sensor.

The sensor would be on the top front half of the pass. valve cover, with a 3 wire connection (it looks like eyes and a nose sort of) if it's an '04 engine. Since it's an '03 engine it's below the turbo where it's nice and hard to get to. I believe you have to take off the intake manifold to get to it. If the pass. valve cover says it's an '03 model engine, then it is what it is. Either way the ICP REGULATOR is located in the lid of the HPOP cover under the turbo right in front of the '03 ICP sensor. That's the one I believe that goes out most commonly. good luck

Thanks for the replies. I was afraid you were going to tell me it was under the turbo. The only thing on my front passenger valve cover is the glow plug control module. Guess I'll order the Snap-On ICP socket and get it changed. I have access to a lift so it should not be too bad.

I went at it as outlined here ---> LINK

However, to get the threads of the new sensor started, I had to climb underneath and reach up over the bellhousing and over the heat shield. I couldn't do it from above. Other than that, I did everything else the same.

Ahh. I made my own wrench thingy. I didn't think about a crowsfoot... I didn't pull the intake or turbo either, but I'm glad you got 'er figured out easier than I did the first time.

You dont need to pull the intake manifold off to do an ICP on an '03. Crawl underneath, and take a flashlight, youll see it up by the head on the driver side. The IPR is under the turbo, the the ICP.

I think when some people say "intake" they're referring to the air filter and duct to the turbo, not the manifold.

I don't think you can see it from underneath, since a heat shield is between it and the firewall. But you can reach over the heat shield to start the threads, then finish tightening it from the topside. However, if you follow the instructions in the Workshop Manual, the entire procedure is done from underneath and the heat shield is removed to allow access.

Also, I didn't use a crowsfoot because I didn't have one available. I used a 1-1/16" (or whatever the right size is) deep socket cut to the exact length of the ICP sensor. That socket is now sitting on my shelf in the garage with "ICP" sharpied on the side.

Not to bad

I changed the icp sensor this weekend. It took about an hour. I your hands and arms are big as mine are it can be a pain but not too bad. I ent from underneath. I tool off the front drive shaft and the proceeded to take of the heat sheild in the way. 2 10mm bolts and on 13mm bolt. If you can't reach the 13mm bolt from the bottom you can get to it from the top. Only thing is that you have to remove the air intake to the turbo, degas bottle and the ficm and reach behind the valve cover and remove the bolt. I cut a 11/16 wrenc down to about 4 inches and removed the icp and reinstalled the new on and put all back together. Don't forget to replace the connector.

I replaced mine due to very bad oil leak from the icp. No more leaks. I also had to replaced all injector o-rings due to fuel in the oil. That's a more timely job than the icp thing, but got r done.

Truck runs great now. Noticed a difference in performance.

Is a ICP sensor a dealer item? I called advanced and autozone and ask for a ICP sensor and they said they never heard of that.
