one of my friends welded his rear, its the same thing as a spool but cheaper, and there is a chance the welds could break and your diff would explode though.
We've welded up rears before and they haven't broke yet. the catch is that after they've been welded, we fill the void inside the carrier with lead. Just take a lead ingot and use a torch to melt it. Make sure that you clean up any splatter in the housing before you stick it back together. In the event it does break, we can still turn the housing down and use the torch to melt out the lead and replace any parts needed.
i love my welded rear....some people just like to weld the spider gears, but i think that puts to much stress on the cross pin, so i weld the side gears to the carrier too
