I have a stupid question. Ive got a bad transfer case shift motor on my truck, and with a new one retailing for $500+ and my wholesale price is still close to $350. I have a chance to buy a manul shift case with shifter, linkage, boot etc. CHEAP! I know that will be a straight forward swap, but my question is this, what activates the front vacuum hubs on a truck that has manual shift? Just kindda brainstorming at this point.
you would either still retain the switch on the dash and just seal the wires that were leading to the trans or see if there is a aftermarket manual hubs.
I think it has been mentioned here from someone else that it is hard to switch to manual hubs but standby someone I am sure has done it.
Yeah, I thought about that too. Also thought about just making some sort of manual vacuum switch. Like I said, Im just "kicking" the idea around, doubt Ill ever do it, just bored and well you know what happens when we get bored, lots of "I wonder what" type of things come up LOL
Yeah I could, but Im not a fan of aftermarket parts, especially electrical parts. Push come to shove I might go that route, but only as a LAST resort.
Don't be afraid of aftermarket, the ORIGINAL part failed on you, didn't it?
The vacuum hubs are controlled by a solenoid on the passenger-side fenderwell (at least, on the pre-05 SD's). This is controlled by the GEM or whatever the later SD's use in place of the GEM now.
If you have auto hubs, you should be able to manually lock them by hand JUST LIKE "regular" manual hubs.
Other than that, the hole in the floor is the only other consideration
HOWEVER, there is some wiring between even the manual transfer case, and your dashboard to light the 4x4 light, and there is some interaction between the GEM/PCM and when the transfer case is in 4LOW, but I'm not so sure what that's about - maybe the difference between the output shaft speed of the tranny, and the VSS in the rear diff.
Well, Today I was gonna get the motor from NAPA for $126 with a warranty. Before I ordered it I thought I would take one more look at my lunch break. After checking a few things I realized I didnt have power at the motor (I had power there before when I checked it) So I came to the conclusion I didnt have a motor problem. Tonight when I got home I checked it out, figuring I had a wiring problem or a GEM problem. Starting checking all circuits at the 4x4 relay center and low and behold the terminal was broke off from the wire!! Got that fixed up, still not work, was irritated. Knew the relay connector HAD to be the problem. Plugged my scanner up to it to clear the codes from the GEM and after doing so it works!! Evidently you have to clear the codes from the GEM beffore it will work.
